WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Loyola University Maryland men's soccer team lost a heartbreaker Wednesday afternoon at American University, as the Eagles scored in the 89th minute to pick up the 1-0 win at Reeves Athletic Complex.
Sophomore John Toher had a chance to put the Greyhounds (5-7-3, 2-4-1 Patriot League) up in the 86th minute, but his attempt sailed over the goal. Panos Nakhid then capitalized on a failed corner opportunity for the Eagles (10-3-2, 4-2-1), sending a shot past Loyola goalkeeper Matt Sanchez from just outside the box with 1:23 left to play.
Throughout the contest, Loyola was outshot 20-8, with senior Connor Thompson leading the way with three shots and sophomore Laurin Vogel adding two.
Thompson had Loyola's first scoring opportunity in the 28th minute, but he sent a free kick just over the goal.
Sophomore Brad Warenicz then tried to put the Greyhounds ahead right before halftime, dribbling down the right wing before tapping the ball into the top of the box for a left-footed shot in the 44th minute. The ball went high of the goal though.
Sanchez played all 90 minutes in goal for Loyola and finished the game with three saves.
The Greyhounds will look to rebound on Saturday when they host Navy at 7 p.m., for Senior Day. Loyola's four seniors - Joseph Cahalan, Connor Thompson, Andrew Waddington and Joey Wilkins - will be honored in a ceremony about 15 minutes prior to the game.
