Women's Lax Wins Inaugural Patriot League Game At Lafayette

March 15, 2014

Final Stats

EASTON, Pa. - Loyola University Maryland junior All-American Taryn VanThof set a single-game school record with 15 draw controls, while senior All-American Marlee Paton notched a career-best 10 points in a 22-12 win over Lafayette in the Greyhounds' first-ever Patriot League contest at Fisher Stadium Saturday afternoon.

Paton led all players with a personal-best six goals and four assists for Loyola (4-4, 1-0 Patriot League), while junior Hannah Schmitt added a career-high eight points on five goals and a personal-best three assists. Junior Annie Thomas also had a hat trick, recording three goals, while juniors Kara Burke and Molly Hulseman tacked on two goals each. Senior Molly Dickerson, senior Taryn VanThof, junior Elizabeth Barranco and freshman Megan Boepple all added one goal.

The 22 goals were the most the Greyhounds have scored under head coach Jen Adams. They are also the most since Loyola beat American 25-4 at home on May 1, 2002.

For Lafayette (3-5, 0-2), Ana White had four goals, while Amanda Case and Carlianne McCabe added three goals each.

Schmitt and Paton combined to record the first three goals of the game, with Schmitt scoring on a free-position shot at 29:16. Paton added an unassisted score at 27:35, before Schmitt assisted Paton at 24:40 to give Loyola a 3-0 lead. Lafayette was able to notch back-to-back goals to pull within one, 3-2, at 20:32, but another Paton from Schmitt score and a goal from Hulseman by 17:58 extended Loyola's lead back to three, 5-2.

Lafayette then scored four of the game's next six goals, including one with 31 seconds remaining before halftime, to cut the Greyhounds' lead to one, 7-6, at the intermission.

Loyola came out of the break and won 21 of 22 draw controls in the second half, giving the Greyhounds an opportunity to rattle off 15 goals through the final 30 minutes.

VanThof, winning 14 of her 15 draws in the second half, scored first at 29:17, before a Leopards goal at 28:26.

Burke and Annie Thomas answered with back-to-back goals in 25 seconds, sparking a 4-0 run that Schmitt and Hulseman also contributed goals to, giving the Greyhounds a five-goal advantage, 12-7, at 22:56.

Lafayette was able to net two of the next three goals, but Burke, Paton and Annie Thomas strung together three-straight for Loyola in a two-minute span, pushing its lead to seven, at 16-9.

The Leopards again scored two of the next three goals, but another three-goal Greyhound run, sparked by Dickerson's first goal of the season, put Loyola ahead 20-11 with 8:55 to play. Lafayette tallied its final goal of the game at 5:51 before Barranco and Boepple scored their first goals of the season to bring the final score to 22-12. Boepple's goal at 2:04 marked the first of her career.

Paton added four draw controls and three caused turnovers throughout the game, while Hulseman had three draws and VanThof had three caused turnovers.

In goal, sophomore Molly Wolf stopped four shots in the first 50 minutes of action, while freshman Taylor Caldwell played the final 10 minutes and earned one save.

Loyola will return to action on Wednesday when it travels to Bucknell for a 7 p.m. conference contest.
