Swimming & Diving Starts Strong At H2ounds Invitational

BALTIMORE - Loyola University Maryland's men's swimming and diving team leads teams from Iona College, Marist College and Saint Peter's University after the first session of the H2ounds Invitational on Friday night at the Mangione Pool at the Fitness & Aquatic Center.

The Greyhounds women finished the night in front of their counterparts from Iona and Saint Peter's, while Marist edged Loyola on the first day.

On the men's side, Loyola leads Iona, 79-25; Marist, 58-51; and, Saint Peter's, 89-13. The Loyola women are in front of Iona, 76-33, and Saint Peter's, 92-8. Marist holds a 64-46 advantage on the Greyhounds.

Loyola's women's 400-yard medley relay team of Liz McKenna, Tara Mulligan, Kaitlin Richter and Aly Pacitti opened the session with a second-place time of 3:51.07, the third-fastest time in school history.

Marist's team set a pool record of 3:50.83, eclipsing the North Baltimore Aquatic Club's 2003 standard of 3:51.22, a time that the Greyhounds also came in under.

The men's 400-yard medley relay -- Zeke Wolfgang, Ben Cono, Rich Mueller and Madison Hardimon -- posted a win by more than six seconds, finishing in 3:20.43, the fifth-best time in school history.

Cono later led a one-two-three finish for Loyola in the men's 200-yard individual medley. He touched the wall in 1:51.72, the No. 3 time in school history, edging teammates Chris Cary (1:53.64) and Wolfgang (1:54.61).

Lindsey Staszewski won the women's 1-meter diving event with 249.90 points, and Noel Theroux took third in the men's 3-meter diving with 246.83.

Madalyn Myers placed second in the 500-yard freestyle, clocking a time of 5:00.55. She checked in less than a second behind Marist's Bethany Powhida. North Woods took third in the men's 500-yard freestyle in 4:40.27.

Mulligan placed second in the women's 50-yard freestyle (24.33), and Kalie Coyne recorded a third-place time in the women's 200-yard individual medley (2:09.13).

Mueller took second in the men's 50-yard freestyle (21.41), narrowly beating teammate Alec Sperandio (21.63) to the wall.

The women's 800-yard freestyle relay -- Myers, Courteney Martin, Pacitti and Christina Guertin -- finished second in 7:45.80, while the men's 800-yard freestyle relay -- Sperandio, Cary, Jack Bair and Hardimon -- wrapped up the session with a second-place finish (6:59.20), as well.

The event continues Saturday at 10 a.m. with free Chick-Fil-A breakfast sandwiches for all spectators.
