Swimming & Diving Teams Sweep Lafayette

EASTON, Pa. - Sophomore Megan Adlem and freshman Emma Schouten each won three individual events as the Loyola University Maryland women's swimming team improved its record to 4-0 with a 211-88 victory over Lafayette College at the Weinstein Natatorium on Saturday afternoon.

At the same time, senior Ben Cono won three individual events to lead the men's team to a 154-144 victory over the Leopards.

Adlem finished first in the 100 backstroke (1:00.64) and the 200 backstroke (2:11.51) as well as the 200 I.M. (2:15.49) to lead the Greyhounds. She also swam the first leg of the 200-medley relay as Loyola won the event with a time of 1:49.55.

Schouten took first place in the 1,000 freestyle (10:42.86) for her first title. She also won the 200 breaststroke (2:22.52) and the 500 freestyle (5:14.70).

The 200 freestyle relay of Anne Hayburn, Gabrielle Clarkson, Schouten and Megan Dickey took first place with a time of 1:40.19. The second 200 freestyle relay team, comprised of Grace Huckenpoehler, Emily Moyher, Amy Martinelli and Devin Cronin finished third with a time of 1:43.34.

Hayburn also contributed a pair of first place finishes for the women. She won the 200 freestyle (1:57.94) and the 100 butterfly (:58.03). She was also part of the winning 200 medley relay team, along with Adlem, Cronin and Dickey.

Cronin also had an individual first-place finish in the 200 breaststroke (1:05.85).

In addition to swimming on two first place relays, Dickey won the 100 freestyle (0:55.19).

Freshman Alexa Stewart turned in a first place showing in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:13.96, edging out her teammate, Mary Katherine Clark (2:16.42).

The Greyhounds swept both diving events as junior Lindsey Staszewski won the 1-meter discipline with 246.08 points and the 3-meter version with 271.43 points. Katie Ray was second on the three-meter with 216.83 points while Maggie Garrahan was runner-up on the one-meter with 221.63 points.

Maddie Myers also swam a strong race in the 1,000 freestyle, finishing second to Schouten with a time of 10:54.36. Aly Pacitti was second in the 200 freestyle (2:00.40).

Cono led the Loyola men's team to its win over Lafayette by taking first place in the 100 breaststroke (:56.43), 200 breaststroke (2:07.02) and the 200 I.M. (1:56.93).

Cono also swam on the victorious 200 medley relay team as he joined Alec Speradino, Colin Anderson and Patrick Clisham to win the relay in a time of 1:37.59.

Freshman Mark Boran also had a strong meet for the Greyhounds. He finished first in the 100-back (:55.01) and took second in the 200-back (1:58.51).

Speradino led the Greyhounds in the 50 freestyle as he finished first with a time of 21.92 seconds. He was also third in the 200-back (1:58.69).

Zac Metzler finished third in the 200 freestyle (1:49.34) and was second in the 500 freestyle (4:59.01). Freshman Ben Amoreno placed second in the 1,000 freestyle (10:24.69), just ahead of Chris Cary, who was third (10:24.97).

Sophomore Richie Kogut was Loyola's top performer in the 200 butterfly as he took third place (0:54.08).

The Greyhounds dominated the diving events in the men's contest, as well. Sam Baluzy was first on the 1-meter board (258.23) and won the 3-meter dive with 284.78. Adrian Halarewicz was second on the 3-meter (198.10) and the 1-meter (190.58).

Loyola returns to action next Saturday, October 28 when it travels to Lehigh University for a 1 p.m. meet.
