Beath’s Equalizer In 82nd Minute Gives Women’s Soccer 1-1 Draw At American

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Claire Beath scored the equalizing goal in the 82nd minute on Wednesday afternoon, giving Loyola University Maryland a 1-1 draw at host American University in Patriot League action.

Beath's goal came less than a minute after American (6-5-4 overall, 1-4-2 Patriot League) tallied the match's first goal.

Yari Bradfield put the Eagles on the board when she connected inside the 18 on a long free-kick by Audrey Denkler at 80:48, staking American to a 1-0 lead with less than 10 minutes to go in regulation.

The Greyhounds quickly rallied, winning a corner on their offensive end. Gillian Borton sent the ball into the box where it was knocked around on the grass before Beath struck a shot that found the netting to tie the game 47 seconds after Bradfield's goal.

"It was a tough game with windy conditions today and just a gritty performance from our team," said Head Coach Naomi Meiburger. "The tenacity and determination to fight back and get the important point on the road was awesome. Our back-line did a fantastic job on their attack and really limited their chances. Claire Beath had a game saving tackle at one end and then scored the goal to tie the game. She was tremendous. Mostly, I am proud of the team for finding a way and battling it out on the road against a tough AU side."

Neither team had a shot on goal in regulation following the Loyola goal with American's Juliana Saling's wide-right attempt the only attempt in the final eight minutes.

Denkler had a shot in the first overtime that went wide, the only try in the stanza before the teams headed to the second overtime.

Off the opening touches of the second 10-minute period, Jourdan Ziff ran parallel to the top of the 18 and hit a right-footed shot that curled but ended just outside of the upper-right corner, keeping the score at 0-0.

Moments later, Samm Francucci took a shot for the Eagles that Loyola's Sumer Rahe corralled for a save, keeping the tie alive.

Loyola had two of its best opportunities in the overtime in th 104th minute off the foot of Kate Reese. The first came as Reese was going to the ground inside of 10 yards, and she sent a shot that deflected off the far post and away from harm. Reese then took possession of the ball as American looked to clear, and only to have her shot saved by the Eagles' Morgan Lang.

She had a third shot in the second overtime in the 106th minute that was wide right.

The Greyhounds finished with a 17-12 advantage in shots and a 10-6 lead in those on goal. Rahe made five saves for the Greyhounds, while Lang had eight for the Eagles.

Loyola is back in action on Saturday, October 20, at 7 p.m. when it hosts Lehigh University at Ridley Athletic Complex. Prior to the match, the Greyhounds will honor the six members of its Class of 2019: Julianna Cabrera, Sarah Ensor, Rahe, Kate Reese, Mia Sardella and Ziff.
