WASHINGTON, D.C. - Sophomore
Isabella Therien scored 17 first-half points but the Loyola University Maryland women's basketball team couldn't match that in the second half, as the Greyhounds fell to Georgetown University, 45-30, Tuesday night at McDonough Arena.
Â
In addition to a game-high 17 points, Therien also grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds for her first collegiate double-double. Redshirt senior
Bri Betz-White added eight points for the Greyhounds, while senior
Ashley Hunter and junior
Stephanie Karcz contributed six rebounds each.
Â
The Hoyas knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers to start the game, but Betz-White answered with a pair of baskets to cut Georgetown's lead to two, 6-4. Therien answered the Hoyas' next field goal with her first points of the contest, but a five-point Georgetown run put the Hoyas back in front by seven, 13-6.
Â
It would be all Therien after that though as she closed out the quarter with eight-straight points to give Loyola its first lead, 14-13, at the first break.
Â
Therien would then score all seven of Loyola's second-quarter points while the defense worked to hold the Hoyas scoreless for the final 6:48 of the half, sending the Greyhounds into the locker room with a 21-20 halftime lead.
Â
A slow second-half plagued Loyola though, as it gave up 10-unanswered points before junior
Alexis Gray's free throws at the 4:07 mark. The Hoyas added another four points after that before Betz-White's layup closed out the quarter and brought the Greyhounds with nine, at 34-25.
Â
Georgetown continued its run into the fourth quarter though, stretching its lead to double digits, 40-25, with six-straight points. Dixon would halt the streak with a free throw at the 4:28 mark, but it would be too late as the Hoyas went on to win 45-30.
Â
The Greyhounds will now return to Baltimore to host William & Mary in their 2018-19 home opener on Saturday. Opening tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Reitz Arena.
