Boston College Uses Second Half To Run Away From Women's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA – Boston College outscored the Loyola University Maryland women's basketball team, 21-9, in the third quarter to run away with a 73-47 victory on the first day of the Hawk Classic at Saint Joseph's University Saturday afternoon.

Junior Alexis Gray led the Greyhounds with 11 points, while redshirt senior Bri Betz-White contributed 10. Junior Stephanie Karcz finished the game with six points, eight rebounds, three assists and four steals.

Boston College remained unbeaten on the season and put four Eagles in double figures in scoring for the game. Emma Guy led BC with a game-high 15 points and nine rebounds.

Gray connected from downtown after Boston College's initial basket to put Loyola in front, 3-2, but an and-1 situation put the Eagles back in front, 5-3. Gray answered with a layup to tie the game 5-5, but Boston College went on to score 10 of the final 12 points in the quarter to pull ahead 15-7 at the first break.

Karcz pulled down a rebound and converted the ensuing layup to pull Loyola within six, 15-9, and then had another answer for Boston College's next basket, keeping the Greyhounds within six, 17-11. Sophomore Isabella Therien answered the Eagles before back-to-back treys from Therien and junior Molly Taylor pulled Loyola within two, 21-19, at the 4:17 mark.

The Eagles responded with their own 3-pointer and a driving layup to regain a seven-point advantage, 26-19, but Betz-White converted her and-1 situation and Karcz added a layup for a 5-0 Greyhound run that pulled them within two, 26-24, with 1:20 to play in the half.

Boston College concluded the quarter with a layup and then a 3-pointer at the buzzer to take a 31-24 lead into the halftime break, though.

Loyola fell behind in the third quarter as the Greyhounds were only able to muster three points off of free throws before Gray's trey at the 3:43 mark. Gray connected from downtown again following the Eagles' pair of free throws, but Boston College ended the frame with four-unanswered points to end the quarter with a 52-33 advantage.

Despite giving up the first five points of the fourth quarter, Loyola rallied for an 11-4 run, with four points coming from Betz-White and seven from the hand of Delaney Connolly. Loyola's lone points after that were a free throw from Taleah Dixon and a layup by Laryn Edwards with 51 seconds remaining, marking her first collegiate points.

The Greyhounds will be back in action on Sunday vs. the Hawk Classic tournament hosts, Saint Joseph's, at 2 p.m.
