Women's Basketball Unable To Complete Comeback Against Mount St. Mary's

BALTIMORE - The Loyola University Maryland women's basketball team cut its deficit to four with 1:40 to play, but the Greyhounds wouldn't be able to get any closer as Mount St. Mary's extended its lead back to 10 for a 77-67 victory Saturday afternoon at Reitz Arena.

Redshirt senior Bri Betz-White led four Greyhounds in double figures, scoring 18 points. Junior Stephanie Karcz added 14 points, seven rebounds and three steals, while sophomore Isabella Therien and freshman Taleah Dixon added 10 points each. Dixon's 10 points were a personal best, while she also added a personal-best three steals.

Juliette Lawless led all players with 29 points, including knocking down four of the Mount's 12 3-pointers. Daly Sullivan also hit four treys and finished with 16 points, while Jatarrikah Settle had 12 points.

Sophomore Delaney Connolly started the scoring in the game, but the Mount answered with a 14-2 run to pull ahead 14-4 at the 4:41 mark of the first quarter. Junior Hannah Niles halted the streak with a jumper and then freshman Laryn Edwards converted an and-1 situation following Mount St. Mary's basket to keep Loyola within nine, at 16-9. Karcz answered the Mount's next basket with a pair of free throws but the Mountaineers stretched their lead to 13, 24-11, by finishing the quarter on a 6-0 run.

Loyola outscored Mount St. Mary's 11-5 through the first half of the second quarter to pull within seven, at 29-22, but the Greyhounds wouldn't be able to get any closer as the Mount strung together four-straight points to regain a double-digit advantage.

Despite giving up 10 of the first 12 points of the third quarter, the Greyhounds regrouped and closed out the half on an 18-7 run to cut their deficit to single digits, 60-51.

The Mount knocked down the first basket of the fourth, but free throws from Therien and Dixon brought the Greyhounds within nine again, 63-54. Betz-White came up with a steal on the Mount's next possession and Dixon converted the fast-break layup to bring Loyola within seven, 63-56, with 6:12 to play.

Mount St. Mary's used four-straight points to extend its lead back to 11, 67-57, but Betz-White scored nine of the game's next 12 points to bring Loyola within four, 70-66, with 1:40 to play. That would be as close as the Greyhounds would get though, as the Mountaineers closed out the game with seven of the final eight points.

Loyola will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel up the road to Towson. Opening tip is set for 11 a.m., with the game being part of the Tigers' Field Trip Day.
