Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Treys Not Enough To Get Women's Basketball Past No. 7 Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Loyola University Maryland women's basketball team tied for the program's third-most 3-pointers made in a single game, knocking down 12, but the seventh-ranked Maryland Terrapins earned an 83-48 victory over the Greyhounds Monday in Field Trip Day at XFINITY Center.

In connecting on a season-best 12 treys, Loyola tied its performances against Lehigh in March 2017 and Marist in February 2010. The Greyhounds set the school record at 15 in January of 2011, replacing the previous record of 13 from December 2010.

Sophomore Delaney Connolly led the Greyhounds with 17 points today, hitting a personal-best five treys, while junior Alexis Gray knocked in 15 points. Redshirt senior Bri Betz-White finished with nine points and six assists, while junior Stephanie Karcz had six rebounds.

For Maryland, Taylor Mikesell led all players with 19 points, while Shakira Austin tacked on a double-double of 17 points and 13 rebounds.

Betz-White knocked down the game's first trey to give the Greyhounds an early 3-0 lead, but the Terrapins strung together six-straight points to take a 6-3 advantage into the first media timeout.

Freshman Taleah Dixon converted a pair of free throws after the short break to cut Loyola's deficit to one, 6-5. Gray then kept the Greyhounds within one, 9-8, by knocking down a trey after Maryland converted its and-1 opportunity.

It would be all Terrapins after that though, as they knocked down four triples in a 17-0 run that extended their lead to 26-8 by the 7:55 mark of the second quarter. Connolly connected from beyond the arc twice in an 8-4 Loyola streak that forced Maryland to call a timeout with a 30-16 advantage.

Gray, junior Hannah Niles and Connolly hit 3-pointers after that to help the Greyhounds close out the quarter by connecting on 5-of-6 treys, but the Terrapins found themselves in front, 45-25, at the halftime break.

Loyola continued to find success from beyond the arc, knocking down five more 3-pointers by the end of the game, but Maryland worked its lead to 62-35 by the end of the third quarter and then 83-48 by the end of the game.

The Greyhounds will now break for exams before closing out 2018 with a game at Monmouth on Saturday, December 22. Opening tip is set for noon.
