BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Loyola University Maryland men's and women's tennis teams opened Patriot League play against Lehigh University at Ulster Courts on Sunday afternoon with the Mountain Hawks coming out on top in both contests.
Lehigh's men won, 5-2, while the women were 6-1 victors. The Loyola men's team fell to 6-2 on the season while the women tasted defeat for the first time this spring as the Greyhounds saw their six-match winning streak end.
In the men's match, Lehigh swept all three doubles matches and four of six singles contests to pull out the win.
In doubles play, Blest Jones and Matt Fitzmaurice fell to Jack Martin-Dyer and Jacob Edelchik at number one, 6-0. At number two, Jack Peterson and Bryant Born posted a 6-0 win over Reid Burch and Tyler Blessing. At number three doubles, Brian Hoffarth and Kyle Gower dropped a tough match to George Cooper and Christopher Auteri, 6-4.
Gower came back to win his number three singles match with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Edelchik. Blessing also won his singles match, beating Born, 7-6 (3), 2-6, 7-6 (6).
Jones fell to Martin-Dyer at number one singles, 6-4, 6-3 while Wang beat Burch at number two singles, 6-4, 6-3. At number four singles, Peterson pulled out a 6-0, 3-6, 6-2 win over Fitzmaurice. Auteri clinched the win with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Charlie Shanker.
In the women's match, freshman Kateri Martin provided the Greyhounds was a part of both Loyola victories by winning her doubles and singles matches.
At number one doubles, Martin and Amanda Lanciano defeated Christina Auyeung and Casey Zhong, 6-2. However, the Mountain Hawks won the other two doubles matches to take the doubles point. At number two doubles, Sibal Can and Paula Gonzalez beat Lin Robertson and Abby Thornton, 6-4. Then, Grace Lin and Briana Maravich won the number three doubles match, 6-2.
In singles action, Martin defeated Auyeung at number one, 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (4). Then, Lehigh won the other five singles matches.
At number two, Lanciano dropped a tough 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (3) decision to Gonzalez. Can won the number three singles match with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Robertson. At number four, Lin edged Abby Thornton, 7-5, 6-2. At number five singles, Zhong outlasted Eberle, 6-2, 7-5. Maravich closed out the match with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Chloe Boustany at number six singles.
The Loyola men's team returns to action on Tuesday, March 20 when the Greyhounds host Delaware at the McClure Tennis Center at 3:30 p.m.
The Loyola women's team is back in action on Wednesday, March 21 when the Hounds host George Mason at 4:00.
