BALTIMORE - A trio of second-half goals from
Jake Dengler,
Barry Sharifi and
Morgan Lussi led the Loyola University Maryland men's soccer team to a 3-0 win over Rutgers in the team's season opener at Ridley Athletic Complex Friday night.
Â
Dengler, a sophomore transfer from CCBC Essex, got a head on junior
Gabriel Carlsson's corner kick in the 67th minute and put it over the line to get the Greyhounds the 1-0 advantage.
Â
Sharifi then added an insurance goal in the 73rd minute when the Preseason Patriot League Midfielder of the Year dodged defenders at the top of the box and blasted a strike into the top right corner of the goal.
Â
Lussi capped off the scoring with a third Greyhound goal the 88th minute, running onto a ball in the box and putting it away for his first collegiate goal.
Â
"This is a great result against a quality Big Ten opponent," head coach
Steve Nichols said. "I thought we settled in in the second half and played some really good soccer. I'm happy with the way we've started the season."
Â
Defensively, the Greyhounds held Rutgers to nine shots for the game. Loyola also held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks, including a 5-1 edge in the second half.
Â
In goal,
Chase Vosvick recorded two saves to record his first clean sheet of the season.
Â
Loyola will return to action on Monday when it hosts Mount St. Mary's at 7 p.m.
