Quick Hits About The 'Hounds

  • Loyola University Maryland women's soccer opens its sixth season of play in the Patriot League on Saturday, September 15.
  • The Greyhounds host Colgate University in a 5 p.m. match at Ridley Athletic Complex.
  • The 2018 season is Loyola's ninth at Ridley Athletic Complex.
  • After starting the season with three games on the road, the Saint Francis game on August 26 marked the first of four in a row, six out of seven and eight of 10, at Ridley Athletic Complex.
  • The Greyhounds have outscored their opponents 6-4 over their last four games.
  • Naomi Meiburger is in her fifth season as the head coach at Loyola. She is joined on the sidelines by third-year assistants Kevin Dempsey and Morgan Ruhl and volunteer assistant coach Lacey Phillips.
  • The Greyhounds' 2018 women's soccer roster includes 19 returners with previous experience at Loyola, a transfer and eight freshmen.

Looking Back

  • Sarah Bayer took a Jourdan Ziff outlet pass, carried down the left side of the field and beat two defenders before sending a cross-goal shot into far netting to lift Loyola to a 1-0 win at Mount St. Mary's on Sunday afternoon.
  • Bayer's tally in the 51st minute stood up as the Greyhounds' defense held Mount St. Mary's to only three shots in the rain-soaked game. Sumer Rahe made one save in goal for Loyola and for her second of the season.
  • Mia Sardella started the play on which Bayer scored, taking the ball off the foot of a Mountaineers' player. Sardella turned and threated a pass to Ziff who turned and found Bayer running down the left side.
  • The Greyhounds held Mount St. Mary's to only three total shots.

Series History

  • Colgate took a 4-1-1 lead in the all-time series between the programs with a 3-1 victory on September 15, 2018, in Hamilton, New York. The win was the Raiders' second in a row in the series.
  • Colgate put up a pair of goals in the match's first 26 minutes, getting on the board after 6:37. Emily Crichlow centered a ball from the right side of the box, and Mara Cosentino put in a one-touch finish.
  • Crichlow added a second goal for the Raiders at 25:10 when she used a Martina Loncar assist to volley in a shot. Colgate tagged on a third goal before halftime at 42:17 as Shannon Pawlak tallied a score from 35 yards out.
  • Claire Beath recorded her first collegiate goal to put Loyola on the board early in the second half. Hannah Hoefs won the ball and slipped a pass to Beath at the top of the box where she finished for the Greyhounds.
  • Colgate won the first two meetings between the team sin 2013 and 2014, but Loyola earned a regular-season victory in the series in 2015. The teams then played to a scoreless draw in the 2015 Patriot League Quarterfinals. Loyola, however, advanced to the semifinals on penalty kicks.

To Be Tested Early

  • Loyola will face three teams picked in the top-four of the Patriot League Preseason Poll in its first three conference games. Colgate (Sept. 15) was tabbed third, while the U.S. Naval Academy (Sept. 21) was picked as the preseason favorite. Bucknell (Sept. 26) was selected fourth.

Freshman Breaks Through

  • Sarah Bayer has been a key part of the Greyhounds' offense all season, but she broke through into the scoring column last week. Her assist on a Jourdan Ziff goal in the second half against Towson was her first collegiate point.
  • She then tallied her first goal with a terrific run past two Mount St. Mary's defenders to give the Greyhounds the eventual game-winner on Sunday.

Two For Ziff

  • Jourdan Ziff had the second multi-goal game of her career last Thursday against Towson, tying her career-high in goals from a 2016 game at American University. Ziff tallied two scores in the second half to bring the Greyhounds level against the Tigers.
  • She then had a key outlet pass to Sarah Bayer, setting up her eventual game-winning goal at Mount St. Mary's.

Rahe Of (Sumer) Sunshine

  • Loyola senior goalkeeper Sumer Rahe recorded the seventh clean sheet of her career on September 9 at Mount St. Mary's and has been outstanding in goal for the Greyhounds this season.
  • Rahe has a 1.14 goals-against average and has saved 71.4 percent of shots on goal she has faced; two of the goals she has allowed came on penalty kicks.
  • Over the last two seasons (2017 and thus far in 2018) Rahe has played all but 40 minutes in goal for the Greyhounds.

Coaches Corner

  • "The team has really come together through our non-conference schedule and is looking forward to getting the Patriot League kicked off. It will be an exciting game as we always play well on our home field. This group is still looking for a defining win or moment in our season and the first game of Patriot League presents a fantastic opportunity for us. Right now, it is all about conference play and putting ourselves on the front foot by getting a result." - Head Coach Naomi Meiburger
