BALTIMORE –
Hannah Hoefs scored twice in the first 31 minutes of Sunday night's game, and the Loyola University Maryland women's soccer team delivered a 2-1 non-conference victory against UMBC at Ridley Athletic Complex.
The Greyhounds (2-3-0 overall) enjoyed an 18-3 advantage in shots, holding the Retrievers (0-5-0) without an attempt in the second half.
"This was another very good team effort for us, in every facet of the game," said Head Coach
Naomi Meiburger. "It was great for Hannah to get two goals, and her set-piece was a beautiful shot.
"Our seniors are really stepping up all over field, coming up with big plays at critical moments. They are showing leadership that is helping us put together some very nice soccer."
Hoefs scored her first goal of the season 17 minutes, 40 seconds into the contest, striking a free kick just one yard outside the top-left corner of the box. Her shot sailed over the outstretched hands of UMBC goalkeeper Leah Roth and into the right-side netting, staking the Greyhounds to a 1-0 lead.
That advantage would be short-lived, however, as the Retrievers equalized less than three minutes later. UMBC earned a penalty kick with a foul in the box, and Erin Stevenson converted a low shot to the right, tying the game 20:26 into play.
Ten minutes later, the Greyhounds would earn a penalty of their own.
Kaleigh Gallagher made an excellent run across midfield and slotted a pass through traffic to fellow freshman
Sarah Bayer. She ran onto the ball in the box and was taken down from behind, earning the penalty.
Hoefs stepped to the dot for Loyola and calmly converted to record her first career multi-goal game.
From there, Loyola would keep considerable pressure on UMBC while dominating possession. The Greyhounds earned 12 total corner kicks, 10 coming in the second half as Loyola posted nine shots after the break.
The win is Loyola's second straight after it beat Saint Francis University of Pennsylvania last Sunday. The Greyhounds had a match stopped due to lightning on Friday night. Loyola was leading Utah State University, 1-0, on a goal by Hoefs, but the teams had played only 64 of the required 70 minutes for the game to count, so the score and goal were wiped away.
Loyola is back in action on Thursday, September 6, when it hosts another area rival, Towson University, in a 7 p.m. start at Ridley Athletic Complex.
