LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell University scored out of an unsettled situation in front of the goal with just over 15 minutes left in regulation to secure a 1-0 Patriot League victory over visiting Loyola University Maryland at Emmitt Field on Wednesday night.
Â
The Bison (4-6-1 overall, 2-1-0 Patriot League) got on the board at 74:26 on the play-out of a corner kick. Carly Baggott's initial save was headed off the line by Loyola's
Mia Sardella, but the ball ended up on the ground at the feet of several players inside the six.
Â
Kate Henesey got a toe on it and drove it into center-net for the game's first goal.
"We played so well tonight against the reigning Patriot League champions," said Head Coach
Naomi Meiburger. "If you watch the game, it was really an unbelievable performance from the players. I know they are gutted to come away without the win, but I told them I am so proud of how they played tonight. They played with such grit and heart, what more can I ask for? The team have shown tremendous growth over the course of this year. Tonight came down to one mistake, and it is unfortunate because I thought we were the better team on the night."
Â
With just over 11 minutes left in regulation,
Hannah Hoefs had a quality look for the Greyhounds, turning and creating space for herself at the top of the box. She bent a shot that sailed just wide of the right post.
Â
Ann-Kathrin Wolfram had a shot saved with less than five minutes on the clock, a strike that would be Loyola's last shot of the game.
Â
The Bison did not have a shot on goal in the first half after being outshot, 6-3, although Bucknell had a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Â
Hannah Hoefs put the first shot on goal for the either team in the seventh minute, taking a 20-yard shot from the top left that was pulled in by Bucknell goalkeeper Theresa Adu-Attobrah. Loyola had a good chance to get on the board 14 minutes later when a pass was laid off to
Ann-Kathrin Wolfram just outside the 18, but her shot in space sailed just high.
Â
Loyola (3-7-0, 0-3-0) had a chance at a penalty kick at 35:12 when the Greyhounds drew a foul in the box, but
Julia Gray's shot was diverted by Adu-Attobrah. The ball caromed off the left post and back to Adu-Attobrah who clutched it before a Loyola player could get to it.
Â
Sumer Rahe made her first save of the game less than five minutes into the second half on a low, one-hopper by Henesey.
Â
The Greyhounds nearly scored in the 62
nd minute when
Ariel Tillman sent a long cross from the right side that was misplayed by Adu-Attobrah. It went over her head and landed less than two feet outside the goal, but the Bison cleared it away.
Â
Two minutes later,
Kate Reese drew a foul 25 yards out, and
Hannah Hoefs bent a low shot on goal, but Adu-Attobrah made a kick save to knock it off line. Tillman then had a shot from the right that was saved, Â and Reese had another inside of the six that was blocked away by a defender.
Â
The Greyhounds finished with a 13-10 lead in shots as both teams put five on goal. Rahe made four saves for the Greyhounds.
Â
Loyola returns to home action on Saturday, September 29, when it hosts the U.S. Military Academy at 12 noon at Ridley Athletic Complex.
