Quick Hits About The 'Hounds

  • Loyola plays its last two games before starting Patriot League action this week when it takes on two intra-state rivals on Friday and Sunday.
  • The Greyhounds first play Towson University in a 7 p.m. outing on Thursday, September 6, at Ridley Athletic Complex. The game against the Tigers will be broadcast live on the Patriot League Network.
  • Loyola then travels to Mount St. Mary's on Sunday, September 9, for a 1 p.m. game in Emmitsburg, Maryland.
  • The 2018 season is Loyola's ninth at Ridley Athletic Complex.
  • After starting the season with three games on the road, the Saint Francis game on August 26 marked the first of four in a row at Ridley Athletic Complex.
  • Naomi Meiburger is in her fifth season as the head coach at Loyola. She is joined on the sidelines by third-year assistants Kevin Dempsey and Morgan Ruhl and volunteer assistant coach Lacey Phillips.
  • The Greyhounds' 2018 women's soccer roster includes 19 returners with previous experience at Loyola, a transfer and eight freshmen.

Looking Back

  • Hannah Hoefs scored twice in the first 31 minutes of Sunday night's game, and Loyola team delivered a 2-1 non-conference victory against UMBC on Sunday night.
  • The Greyhounds enjoyed an 18-3 advantage in shots, holding the Retrievers without an attempt in the second half.
  • Hoefs scored her first goal of the season 17:40 into the contest, striking a free kick just one yard outside the top-left corner of the box.
  • That advantage would be short-lived, however, as the Retrievers equalized less than three minutes later.
  • Ten minutes later, the Greyhounds would earn a penalty of their own that Hoefs converted.

Series History

  • Friday's match at Ridley Athletic Complex will be the 18th all-time meeting between Loyola and Towson. The Greyhounds hold a 12-3-0 lead in the series.
  • The Tigers' coaching staff is quite familiar with Loyola. Head Coach Katherine Remy Vettori was the Greyhounds' head coach from 2008-13, and Assistant Coach Matt Dwyer was an assistant for the Loyola men's team from 2007-17.
  • Last year, Towson scored 78 on a counterattack 78 seconds into the opening half, and while Loyola held the Tigers to just three shots for the remainder of the game, Towson came away with a 1-0 win.
  • Sunday's game at Mount St. Mary's will mark the 11th all-time meeting between the Mountaineers and Loyola. Last season, they played in the season-opener, and Mount St. Mary's finished with a 3-1 decision to snap Loyola's nine-match winning streak in the series.

Was It Two Or Three?

  • Hannah Hoefs scored three times last week for the Greyhounds, but due to a fluke only two counted in her career stats.
  • The junior, who played her first season at Loyola in 2017 after transferring from the University of Maryland, tallied a goal against Utah State Friday night, but the game was called after only 65 minutes due to weather. NCAA rules stipulate that teams must play at least 70 minutes for the game to be considered official, so the goal and all other stats were wiped out.
  • Hoefs was not deterred, scoring her first goal fo the season against UMBC, driving home a 19-yard free kick early in the first half. She then added a penalty kick in the 31st minute to put the Greyhounds up, 2-1.
  • She was named the Patriot League Midfielder of the Week for her efforts.

Momentum In Maryland

  • Loyola plays two intra-state rivals this week and will look to continue its winning ways against programs that share the State of Maryland. Loyola is 34-14-7 (.682) all-time versus opponents from Maryland.

Rahe Of (Sumer) Sunshine

  • Loyola senior goalkeeper Sumer Rahe recorded the sixth clean sheet of her career on August 26 against St. Francis (Pa.) and has been outstanding in goal for the Greyhounds this season.
  • Rahe has a 1.00 goals-against average and has saved 78.3 percent of shots on goal she has faced, two of those goals coming on penalty kicks.
  • Over the last two season (2017 and thus far in 2018) Rahe has played all but 40 minutes in goal for the Greyhounds.

Coaches Corner

  • "Every time this team plays we see improvements. As a coach, this is encouraging to see progress not just over the long haul but even game to game. We have different players stepping up in each game and making big plays, and this is so important for us. I can't wait to watch this group again on Thursday; it is going to be an exciting match." - Head Coach Naomi Meiburger
