Sophomore
Isabella Therien turned in her second collegiate double-double and the Loyola University Maryland women's basketball team got hot in the third quarter, en route to a 62-50 win over Lafayette in Patriot League play Sunday afternoon at Reitz Arena.
Â
Therien led all players with a career-high 28 points and 11 rebounds, while junior
Alexis Gray added 11 points and six rebounds.
Â
Natalie Kucowski led Lafayette with 16 points and eight rebounds.
Â
Therien knocked down one of her game-high five 3-pointers to start the second half to help the Greyhounds turn a 21-20 halftime advantage into a four-point lead. The Leopards pulled within one, but they wouldn't be able to regain the lead as sophomore
Delaney Connolly and Therien combined to convert four-straight free throws and spark a 28-8 run that put Loyola ahead 52-31 by the end of the third quarter.
Â
The Greyhounds shot 56.3 percent from the field in the third quarter, including knocking down seven triples, and hit all six free throws they attempted.
Â
Loyola carried the momentum from Gray's third-quarter buzzer-beating 3-pointer into the fourth quarter, where it scored eight of the first 12 points to pull ahead 60-35, with under five minutes to play. Lafayette closed out the game by scoring 15 of the final 17 points, but its deficit would be too much to overcome, as the Greyhounds cruised to the 12-point victory.
Â
For the game, the Greyhounds knocked down a season-high 10 triples, tying them for the eight-most in a single game in program history. Loyola had four different players hit from downtown; including five from Therien, three from Gray and one each from junior
Molly Taylor and freshman
Taleah Dixon.
Â
Loyola will return to action on Wednesday when it hosts Bucknell at 6 p.m.
