BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Loyola University Maryland women's basketball team couldn't find scoring late, as Lehigh used a 10-0 run to pull away from the Greyhounds in a 52-41 win Wednesday night at Stabler Arena.
Â
The Greyhounds scored the first four points of the fourth quarter to tie the game at 38 all, but the Mountain Hawks knocked down a triple to regain the lead. Sophomore
Isabella Therien scored two of her team-high 21 points to pull Loyola within one, but Lehigh used its 10-0 run to stretch its lead to 51-40 with 1:21 to play. Junior
Alexis Gray closed out the scoring in the game to account for the final score.
Â
In addition to Therien's 21 points, junior
Stephanie Karcz contributed seven points and a game-high eight rebounds.
Â
For Lehigh, Hailey Pascoe led all players with 26 points.
Â
Therien started the scoring with a layup at the 7:54 mark and the Mountain Hawks answered with a 3-pointer, followed by a jumper at 6:18 to pull ahead 5-2. The two teams would go cold after that though, with Lehigh holding Loyola to those two first-quarter points, the fewest-ever points for the Greyhounds in a single quarter.
Â
Lehigh would break the scoreless streak at the 8:57 mark of the second quarter and senior
Bri Betz-White would snap Loyola's scoreless streak of nine minutes and 12 seconds just 15 seconds later, draining a 3-pointer. Â
Â
The two teams would continue to trade points after that, with junior
Molly Taylor's layup at 2:24 bringing Loyola within one, 15-14. Pascoe scored her 13th point for Lehigh though, pushing the Mountain Hawks back ahead three, 17-14, with 1:47 to play in the half.
Â
Therien got the Greyhounds within one again, with a layup, but the Mountain Hawks answered with their fourth triple to regain a four-point advantage, 20-16. Freshman
Taleah Dixon's layup at the buzzer cut Loyola's deficit to two, 20-18, at the halftime intermission.
Â
Lehigh opened the second half with a 9-2 run that gave the Mountain Hawks their largest lead of the game at the time, 29-20. Junior
Alexis Gray connected from beyond-the-arc, followed by a six-point scoring spree by Therien that moved the score to 34-29 in favor of the home team.
Â
Following the Mountain Hawks' jumper, Karcz went on a 5-0 run that pulled Loyola within two, 36-34, with 48 seconds to go, but Loyola wouldn't be able to tie it up as Lehigh finished the quarter with a basket for a 38-34 advantage.
Â
Points from Karcz and Therien to start the fourth quarter evened the game for the first time, at 38-38, with 7:50 left to play. The Mountain Hawks wouldn't relinquish their lead though, as they knocked down a triple and then went on their 10-0 run following Therien's layup.
Â
The Greyhounds will be back in action on Saturday when they return home to host Army West Point and its annual Women In Sports Day event. WISD will begin at noon with opening tipoff set for 2 p.m. Â
