WEST POINT, N.Y. – Aunikah King broke a scoreless tie 2:37 into overtime, helping Army West Point edge Loyola University Maryland women's soccer by a 1-0 final on Saturday.
The Greyhounds (5-6-2, 2-1-2 Patriot League) drop their first conference match of the season, while the Black Knights (5-5-3, 2-2-1) avenge a 1-0 defeat in last year's meeting between the two sides.
Little separated the teams throughout the night. Both sides managed four shots on goal, while Army led 10-6 in total shots and Loyola had a 5-3 edge in corners.
King's game-winner came off a long ball from goalkeeper Sydney Cassalia. Her effort was flicked on by Alyssa Carfagno to set up a breakaway for King, who sent a low shot into the left corner.
Each team had a quality opportunity to break through prior to the intermission.
Maddie Hart had a shot go off the post in the 22nd minute, while Carfagno sent a shot off the crossbar for the home side with 8:33 left in the opening half.
Claire Beath had one of the better chances for Loyola after halftime, firing a shot just left of the goal in the 58th minute. The Greyhounds' final shot of the evening, an attempt by
Sarah Bayer 1:25 after Beath's effort, was secured by Cassalia.
Paige Sim made three saves while suffering her first collegiate defeat in goal. Cassalia finished with four stops for the Black Knights.
Loyola is now tied for third in the Patriot League standings with Lafayette (6-4-3, 2-1-2) heading into a key matchup between the two sides at 1 p.m. next Saturday at Ridley Athletic Complex. Both teams remain just two points back of first-place Navy, which suffered its first conference defeat at Holy Cross earlier this afternoon.
