Forsythe Sets Patriot League, School Record For Digs In Win Over Holy Cross

BALTIMORE – Loyola University Maryland sophomore libero Katie Forsythe set another school and Patriot League record on Saturday, pulling up 46 digs in a four-set win against College of the Holy Cross. The Greyhounds dropped the first set, but rallied for a 22-25, 25-21, 25-16, 25-16 victory.

Forsythe's 46 digs eclipsed her previous best of 42 that set a school records last year in a four-set road win at Holy Cross. It also broke the five-year old mark of 43 that the Crusaders' Emily Popp set as a conference record in 2014 when Holy Cross played Bucknell.

The total put up today by Forsythe is second-most by an player in NCAA Division I this season, behind only the 48 Bradley University's Emma Raleigh had earlier this season. Today's 46 digs also moved her into fourth in single-season digs in the Patriot League with 578 through 24 matches; she tops the list with her record-setting 697 last year.

Ann Ernst led all players with 18 kills in the match, hitting .280 in the process. Ernst moved into third all-time at Loyola (11-13 overall, 4-6 Patriot League) in kills with 1,471, passing the 1,463 put up by Sarah Becker from 1991-94.

Abby Hamilton added 15 kills and 10 digs, while Molly Jarvis posted 10 kills and eight total blocks. Corinne Filograna had 14 digs and a career-high five service aces, while Alaina Acchione posted a double-double with 25 assists and 10 digs.

Forsythe's dig total capped a week that she posted 121 in three matches. She had 36 in a five-set contest at American University on Tuesday night before tallying 39 last night in four sets against Colgate University. In the 13 sets Loyola played this week, Forsythe averaged 9.31 digs per.

Holy Cross maintained a one to two points lead through most of the first set and went up 23-19 on a Grace Benck kill before three in a row by Loyola, including kills by Adara Kellogg and Ernst, got the Greyhounds within one, 23-22.

The Crusaders, however, called a timeout and came out to score the last two points of the set to take an early lead in the match.

Loyola scored 10 of the second set's first 14 points to lead 10-4 on one of FIlograna's aces, but Holy Cross (3-21, 0-10) pulled within two, 13-11, on a Benck kill.

The Greyhounds then reeled off eight of nine points to go up 21-12 on an Ernst service ace, and while Holy Cross scored four in a row to close within three, 23-20, two kills by Hamilton in the set's final points evened the match at 1-1.

Holy Cross went up 12-9 in the third when Clare Honan put away an overpass for a kill, but Loyola tied the score at 14-14 on a Hamilton kill, and another Filograna ace made it 15-14. With Filograna still serving – she would serve eight-straight points, three on aces – Loyola took a 21-14 lead on another Hamilton put-away.

Loyola then never trailed in the fourth set, leading by as many as eight on multiple occasions.

The Greyhounds put away 10 blocks of the Crusaders in the match as Jarvis led the way with eight total including two of the solo variety. Hamilton and Ernst were each in on three.

Loyola heads on a two-match road trip next weekend when it visits Lafayette College on Friday, November 1, for a 7 p.m. contest, and then Bucknell University at 4 p.m. the following day.
