Volleyball’s Season Ends with Four-Set Defeat at Army in Patriot League Quarterfinals

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Sydney Morriss and Courtney Horace combined for 37 of Army West Point's 60 kills in the match, including the final two of the contest, as Loyola University Maryland's season concluded with a four-set defeat to the Black Knights in Tuesday's Patriot League quarterfinal.

Set scores were 25-23, 22-25, 25-22, 25-21. Army (22-9) advances to face Colgate in a semifinal matchup on Saturday, while the Greyhounds wrap up 2019 with a final record of 13-18.

Abby Hamilton had a team-high 16 kills (.255 attack percentage) to go along with 13 digs for the visitors. Ann Ernst (10 kills, 12 digs, five blocks) and Molly Jarvis (11 kills) also cracked double figures offensively in the final match of their collegiate careers. Mackenzie Fedota contributed to six of Loyola's 12 blocks, and Katie Forsythe finished off another stellar defensive season with 27 digs in the defeat.

All four sets went down to the wire. The Black Knights trailed 22-21 late in the opener before closing on a 4-1 run. In the second set, Loyola saw a 23-15 advantage reduced down to 23-22 before a block by Jarvis and Ashley Dwyer and an attack error helped level the contest.

The Greyhounds were up late in the third as well, as back-to-back kills by Ernst and Jarvis put the visitors up 21-20 and forced an Army timeout. They took the next point out of the break as well, but lost the next five to go down two sets to one in the match.

Loyola's last lead in the fourth set came at 17-16. Army won the following three points to move in front for good, with a kill from Horace closing out the quarterfinal.

With her 10 kills tonight, Ernst concludes her storied collegiate career with 1,597 kills all-time. That total ranks third in program history and fifth all-time in the Patriot League. Her 493 kills in 2019 were also the third most in Loyola single-season history. Ernst recorded 10+ kills in each of her final 19 matches.

Forsythe, who earned her second-straight Patriot League Libero of the Year honor on Monday, extended her school and conference single-season digs record to 753 in her final match of the season. That figure is the 17th most in Division I since the current scoring format was adopted in 2008. Forsythe will enter her junior season with 1,450 career digs, already within 593 of the program's all-time record.

Fedota's six blocks were a new season-high, and Loyola's 12 blocks as a team on Tuesday matched a season-best.
