Karcz Scores 1,000 Career Point, Women’s Basketball Falls at FAU

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Stephanie Karcz became the 22nd player in Loyola University Maryland women's basketball history to reach 1,000 points in her collegiate career, leading the Greyhounds in a 72-61 loss at Florida Atlantic on Friday afternoon.

Karcz achieved her latest milestone in the fourth quarter, stealing an FAU pass and cruising in for a layup with 1:53 left in regulation. She totaled 20 points, 13 rebounds, six assists and six steals, recording her third-straight double-double and scoring 20+ points for an 11th time at Loyola.

The Owls (5-2) win their fourth game in a row and advance to play Kansas in Saturday's championship game. The Greyhounds (1-5) will take on Wright State in a consolation matchup at 11 a.m. to begin the final day of FAU's holiday tournament.

Alexis Gray chipped in 14 points in the defeat, while Delaney Connolly added eight points and five rebounds. Lotta Vehka-Aho (15 points, eight rebounds) led five FAU players in double figures.

Loyola fell behind 15-2 in the early stages of the contest, but used a 20-5 run to jump in front midway through the second quarter. Back-to-back 3-pointers from Connolly finished off the stretch to give the Greyhounds a 22-20 advantage.

The Owls scored 10 of the final 14 points of the half to take a 30-26 lead into the intermission. The teams were separated by a single possession for a majority of the third quarter, and a 3-pointer by Bri Rozzi made the score 49-46 in favor of FAU with 9:55 left in the fourth.

Nikola Ozula responded with six points during a 9-1 run for the Owls to put them back ahead by double digits, and Loyola got no closer than eight in the final minutes.

Karcz, who entered the day leading Division I in steals per game, totaled six thefts for a fourth-consecutive contest. She has 31 steals (5.2 per game) to start the season for Loyola, and she is only five away from matching Katie Sheahin (2009-13) for the program record of 347 steals. Karcz is also one of just three Patriot League players currently averaging a double-double on the year (13.3 ppg, 10.2 rpg).

Tomorrow will be Loyola's first-ever matchup against Wright State. The Raiders, who went 27-7 and finished as Horizon League champions in 2018-19, dropped a 74-63 decision to Kansas earlier this afternoon.
