BALTIMORE – Loyola University Maryland women's soccer makes its first Patriot League tournament appearance since 2015, with the fourth-seeded Greyhounds hosting No. 5 Lafayette at 7 p.m. Tuesday night. The winner advances to Friday's semifinal round at Navy.

This is the second home playoff game for Loyola since joining the Patriot League. The Greyhounds advanced 4-3 on PK's following a 0-0 draw vs. Colgate in the 2015 Patriot League quarterfinals.

Last Time Out

  • Paige Sim made seven saves, including one off a penalty kick in the 60th minute, as Loyola clinched a home playoff game with a 0-0 draw at conference-leading Navy on Friday.
  • Navy (15-2-2, 6-1-2) had a 25-2 advantage in shots, including 12-0 after halftime, but was unable to get anything past Sim.
  • Loyola's playoff berth was secured during the game following losses by Lehigh and Bucknell.
  • Navy, which was shutout for just the third time in 2019, saw a four-game winning streak come to an end.
  • Loyola improved to 1-1-3 in its five Patriot League road games this season, allowing just one goal across 512 minutes of game action.

Series History

  • Loyola leads 4-2-3 in a series which dates back to 1998.
  • This will be the first playoff meeting between the two sides. 
  • Loyola earned a 2-1 victory during the regular season meeting at Ridley on Oct. 19.
  • After falling behind early, Hannah Hoefs and Kaleigh Gallagher scored less than three minutes apart midway through the first half to secure the win.
  • Lafayette had won the two previous meetings in 2018 (3-1) and 2017 (1-0).

About the Leopards

  • Lafayette sealed its playoff berth with a dramatic 2-1 comeback win over Boston University on Saturday. The Leopards tied the score in the 82nd minute, and Sophie Saldivar netted the game-winner with 3:39 left in regulation.
  • Lafayette is making its seventh Patriot League tournament appearance since the conference was formed in 1990. The Leopards are 1-6 in their previous seven playoff games, with the lone win a 1-0 double OT triumph at Lehigh in the 2016 quarterfinals.
  • Krista Kissell (4 G, 6 A) ranks second in the Patriot League with 14 points, while Saldivar (6 G, 1 A) is second in goals and tied for third in points (13).
Around the Patriot League
  • No. 3 Army West Point hosts No. 6 Colgate in the other Patriot League quarterfinal at 7 p.m. on Tuesday. Colgate clinched a playoff berth, and dropped Army down to the three seed, with a 1-0 victory at West Point on Saturday.
  • No. 1 Navy and No. 2 Holy Cross earned first round byes. Holy Cross sealed its first playoff appearance since 2000 with a 3-0 win over Bucknell on Friday.
  • Friday's semifinals will be played at 4 and 7 p.m. at Navy, while the Patriot League Championship game is set for 1 p.m. on Sunday afternoon in Annapolis.
Goals Hard to Come By
  • Five of Loyola's last six games have been scoreless at the end of regulation. The Greyhounds are 1-2-3 during that stretch, with the lone victory coming over Lafayette in mid-October.
  • Goalkeeper Paige Sim and a Loyola backline which includes Julia Gray, Claire Beath, Beth Eversman, Mary Theresa Corcoran and Nicole Rivas have held opponents to one goal or fewer in each of the team's last 10 games dating back to Sept. 21.
  • Loyola has been held without a goal for its last 399 minutes of game action.
Hoefs, Bayer Among Top Offensive Threats
  • Hannah Hoefs (7 G, 3 A) and Sarah Bayer (4 G, 2 A) have been among the Patriot League leaders in points throughout the season.
  • Three of Hoefs' seven goals have come against Patriot League opponents, including the lone strike in Loyola's 1-0 win at Lehigh in the 2019 conference opener.
  • Bayer had the lone Greyhound goal in a 1-1 draw with Holy Cross, and she provided the game-winner in a 3-1 conference victory over American on Oct. 2.
  • Bayer was a second team All-Patriot League performer in 2018, while Hoefs was a third-team honoree.
