MILWAUKEE – Marquette University's Markus Howard scored 19 of the game's first 21 points as the host Golden Eagles jumped out to a 21-0 lead Tuesday night, pulling away for an 88-53 non-conference victory over Loyola University Maryland in the teams' season-opener at the Fiserv Forum in front of an announced crowd of 13,103.
Howard finished 7 of 10 from 3-point range to score a game-high 38 points. His 30 before halftime propelled the Golden Eagles (1-0 overall) to a 44-15 advantage at the break.
Loyola shot just 16.2 percent from the field in the first half, but the Greyhounds (0-1) improved significantly in the second half, making 50 percent of their 28 attempts after the break.
Down 51-21 just 53 seconds into the second half, Loyola scored 10 in a row to get within 21, but it would not draw closer for the remainder of the game.
Andrew Kostecka scored 16 points to lead the Greyhounds, while
Isaiah Hart had 13 points, four steals and four assists.
The Greyhounds had only 10 turnovers in the game, while Marquette finished with 21.
Loyola is back in action on Sunday, November 9, when it returns to the Midwest to face Chicago State University.
