Navy Advances on PK’s, Eliminates Women’s Soccer in Patriot League Semifinals

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – An outstanding season came to a difficult end for Loyola University Maryland women's soccer on Friday, as top-seeded Navy advanced 4-3 on penalty kicks following a 1-1 draw in the first of two Patriot League semifinals.

The Greyhounds end their season with a final record of 7-7-5, while the Midshipmen (15-2-3) will play either No. 2 Holy Cross or No. 3 Army West Point in Sunday afternoon's championship game.

Hannah Hoefs scored her ninth goal of the season with 11:58 remaining in regulation to force extra time, curling in a corner kick straight into the top right corner. Hoefs' nine goals are the most for any Loyola player in a single season since 2012. She ends her stellar collegiate career with 39 points (15 G, 9 A) in 52 appearances for the Greyhounds.

Gina Peraino opened the scoring for the home side in the 43rd minute, beating Loyola goalie Paige Sim on a scramble in front after a corner kick. That goal put the Greyhounds behind in regulation for only the second time in 12 games dating back to Sept. 15.

Navy had a 17-3 edge in shots overall, and a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks. Sim made four saves while concluding her debut season with a 6-2-5 record, a 0.54 goals-against average and a .877 save percentage.

The teams were tied 3-3 through four rounds of penalty kicks, with Hoefs, Sabrina Daglish and Kate Reese converting for the Greyhounds. Navy's Emily Keast put the Mids up to start the fifth round, and their advancement was secured after Loyola had an attempt ring off the crossbar.

Loyola's seven victories this fall were its most in a season since 2012. The Greyhound backline held opponents to one goal or fewer in each of the final 12 games to conclude the season.

Hoefs, Reese, Mary Theresa Corcoran, Maddie Hart, Jen Moutenot, Beth Eversman and Casey McKenzie each wrapped up their collegiate careers with tonight's draw.

Navy will host the 2019 Patriot League Championship game, with opening kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m. on Sunday.
