EMMITSBURG, Md. –
Andrew Kostecka scored 25 points, while
Cam Spencer tallied 15 and dished out a career-high matching six assists, on Saturday as Loyola University Maryland won its third in a row by posting a 64-48 decision at Mount St. Mary's University, the Greyhounds first victory on the Mountaineers' home court since 2011.
Kostecka poured in 16 of his game-high total in the first half as the Greyhounds built a 32-21 lead at the break, while Spencer had his fifth-straight outing with five or more assists and one or fewer turnovers. He did not have a miscue Saturday.
KaVaughn Scott added six points had a game-best eight rebounds and tied his career0highw ith three assists;
Isaiah Hart scored seven, and
Jaylin Andrews added five.
Defensively, Loyola (6-4 overall) shut down the Mountaineers' leading scorer, junior Jalen Gibbs who was averaging 14.1 points per game entering Saturday. Gibbs did not score for just the second time in his Mount St. Mary's career, going 0 of 7 from the field in more than 26 minutes of action.
The Greyhounds held Mount St. Mary's (3-7) to 33.3 percent from the field (18 of 54) and just 11.8 percent (2 of 17) from 3-point range. The Mountaineers also committed 13 turnovers to just five for Loyola.
Mount St. Mary's took a 15-13 lead on a Malik Jefferson jumper with 7:20 left in the first half, but threes on back-to-back possessions by Kostecka kickstarted a 19-6 Greyhounds run to close the half.
Kostecka had 10 of his points during that run, and Spencer hit a three and had three assists.
Less than two minutes into the second half, Mount St. Mary's cut the deficit to six, but five in a row by the Greyhounds on a Scott dunk and three free throws by Spencer quickly put it back into double digits.
Damian Chong Qui, who scored 15 of his Mount St. Mary's-high 16 after halftime, converted in the paint with 5:20 on the clock to get the Mountaineers within seven, 49-42, but Loyola tallied the next seven to lead 56-42 on a reverse layup by Spencer with 3:14 to play. The lead would stay at 10 or more for the remainder of the game.
In addition to Chong Qui's 16 points, Jefferson tallied 14 for Mount St. Mary's.
The game was the 175
th in the all-time series between the teams and the second win in a row for Loyola. The Mountaineers, however, had won the last three meetings at Knott Arena by an average of 11.3 points.
Loyola will take two weeks off for fall-semester final exams before its next game. The Greyhounds host Elizabethtown College at 2 p.m. on Saturday, December 21, in Reitz Arena.
