BALTIMORE – Second-ranked Loyola University Maryland scored five-straight goals in the first quarter and later tallied the first six of the third to go on to an 18-12 non-conference victory over No. 15 Johns Hopkins University at Homewood Field on Saturday afternoon.
 
Pat Spencer had three goals and four assists, Chase Scanlan had four and two, Kevin Lindley scored four times, Alex McGovern added two goals and a pair of assists and John Duffy scored three times for the Greyhounds (2-0 overall).
 
Jacob Stover made 12 saves in goal, giving him 49 in the last three games.
 
The Blue Jays took a 1-0 lead 5:04 into the game on Brett Baskin's goal, but Scanlan tallied his first of four just 24 seconds later to start the 5-0 Loyola run.
 
John Duffy and Logan Devereaux added unassisted goals at 8:12 and 6:55 before Spencer threw a behind-the-head goal to Lindley for a goal at 5:30. Lindley tallied another goal off a McGovern assist at 4:34, making it 5-1 Greyhounds.
 
The Blue Jays (0-2) struck back quickly when Matt Nareweski won the face-off and fed Joey Epstein for a goal six ticks after Lindley's second, but Spencer scored his first of the day off a McGovern assist at 2:33, making it a 6-2 lead.
 
Epstein, however, got the Blue Jays within three at the end of the quarter when he scored unassisted with 16 seconds on the clock, but Scanlan used a Spencer feed to record the second's opening goal at 11:22.
  Kyle Marr scored his first of three second-quarter goals at 9:40, bringing the margin to 7-4, but Spencer struck back with the next two goals.
 
Both of Spencer's goals came unassisted, the first at 8:24 when he juked his defender who fell before Spencer ripped a low shot for a goal. He then rolled past his defender below goal-line, leaped across the face of the goal and scored with 1:59 to go in the quarter, pushing the Greyhounds' advantage to 9-4.
 
That margin would shrink to three, however, at the break as Marr connected on extra-man with 27 ticks on the clock, and he scored again 10 seconds later off a Matt Hubler assist following a Johns Hopkins face-off win. Marr nearly added a third before the half, but his shot went wide left, and Loyola was up 9-6 at the break.
 
The Greyhounds came out quickly in the third as Lindley tallied his third of the day, off a Scanlan assist, 5 seconds in, and Scanlan then notched his third at 12:38 when he stepped off a defender and ripped a sidearm shot into the net.
 
Scanlan was involved in the next goal, too, feeding Duffy for a 15-yard step-down on extra-man at 11:36, and Lindley made it a 13-6 game with his fourth of the day off a Spencer behind-the-head assist with 9:52 on the clock.
 
Spencer was on the assisting end again of the next goal, throwing to McGovern for his first of the second half at 7:44, and P.J. Brown face-dodged his defender to sling a hard 12-yarder with 5:32 to play in the third, making it six-straight Loyola goals and a 15-6 lead.
 
Johns Hopkins came back with two in a row as Epstein scored unassisted with the shot-clock expiring at 3:54, and Marr used a Baskin feed to make it 15-8 Greyhounds 44 ticks later.
 
McGovern dodged for his second goal with 1:50 to go in the third, but Johns Hopkins scored in an unsettled situation after the ensuing faceoff as Robert Kuhn went high-to-low.
Kuhn's goal sent the game to the fourth quarter with Loyola leading 16-9, but Scanlan scored his fourth of the day, unassisted, at 10:48 to push the lead back to eight.
 
Marr and Cole Williams scored back-to-back goals for the Blue Jays with under six and five minutes to play, respectively, and Duffy added his third with under a minute left when beating the Johns Hopkins ride.
 
Loyola had a 31-28 advantage in ground balls in the game, led by Ryan McNulty's six, and five from Alex Johnson. McNulty also tied his career-high with three caused turnovers.

Saturday's win was the Greyhounds' third all-time at Homewood Field, and it also marked Loyola's fifth in six meetings with Johns Hopkins.
 
The Greyhounds will be back on the road next weekend to face another ranked opponent. No. 9 Rutgers University hosts Loyola at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 23.
