Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Lindley Scores Six, But No. 7 Towson Beats Men’s Lacrosse

BALTIMORE – Kevin Lindley scored six goals Wednesday night for the top-ranked Loyola University Maryland men's lacrosse team, but No. 7 Towson held off the Greyhounds for a 12-10 non-conference victory.

Lindley's fifth of the day came one minute, 16 seconds into the second half off a Chase Scanlan feed, tying the game at 6-6, but Brendan Sunday it was the only Greyhounds goal of the third quarter, and Towson tallied the next two to regain the lead for good.

Loyola (3-1 overall) fell behind 6-3 on a Luke Fromert goal by the Tigers with 9:05 to go in the second quarter, but the Greyhounds kept Towson (4-0) off the board for the rest of the half.

Aidan Olmstead beat his defender from 'X' and scored at 8:27 for Loyola, and Kevin Lindley caught a Pat Spencer pass to score with 7:58 left before halftime, cutting the Towson lead to 6-5.

After Lindley's goal tied the game for the first time, neither Loyola, nor Towson scored for more than 13 minutes. Brendan Sunday, who had four goals for Towson, broke through with 34 ticks left in the quarter, and Luke Fromert scored 29 seconds into the fourth to put Towson ahead 8-6.

Lindley tallied his sixth of the night – he has scored four or more in all four Loyola games this year – when Scanlan fed him across the crease for a man-up goal at 13:45, drawing Loyola within a goal.

Brody McLean, however, used a Grant Maloof assist to score 45 seconds later, and it was again a two-goal Towson lead.

Spencer, who had a goal and four assists for Loyola, scored when banging off his defender to draw space and shoot low with 6:19 to play in regulation, bringing the margin back to one, 9-8.

Towson, however, got two goals in the span of eight seconds that provided a cushion for the rest of the game. Timmy Monahan scored unassisted at 5:44, and McLean added another goal eight ticks later off an Alex Woodall feed after the later had won the faceoff.

Loyola, however, would not go away, scoring on extra-man – Scanlan from Spencer – at 3:09 to make it 11-9. Ryan McNulty caused a turnover on defense for Loyola, and he threw ahead to Alex Johnson who sent it to Spencer on the left side. Spencer's shot was saved, but Johnson picked up the rebound and scored at 2:13, making it a 11-10 game.

Towson took possession on the ensuing faceoff, and with time winding down on the shot clock, Jacob Stover made a shot on a low Maloof shot. The ball, however, deflected out of bounds, and Towson backed it up with a new shot clock off the save.

The Tigers were able to run more than a minute off the clock before Jake McLean scored on an empty net with seven ticks left to provide the final margin.

In addition to Lindley's six goals and Spencer's five points, Scanlan scored a goal and had two assists, and Olmstead contributed one of each for Loyola. Stover made 13 saves in goal for the Greyhounds.

Sunday paced Towson with five points on four goals, while Brody McLead added two goals and an assist.

Loyola returns to Ridley Athletic Complex for the first time since February 9 to open Patriot League play on Saturday, March 2, at 3:30 p.m. against College of the Holy Cross. The game is the second of a Greyhounds doubleheader with the women's lacrosse team hosting No. 8 Penn State University at 12 noon.
