No. 5 Virginia Uses Late Run To Overcome No. 10 Women's Lacrosse

Box Score CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Fifth-ranked Virginia scored the final six goals of the game to erase a three-goal deficit, en route to a 12-9 win over the No. 10 Loyola University Maryland women's lacrosse team Wednesday night at Klöckner Stadium.

Sophomore Livy Rosenzweig led the Greyhounds (3-3 overall) with two goals and two assists. Junior Emily Cooper added two goals and one assist, while senior Taylor VanThof also contributed two goals. Senior Hannah Powers and sophomores Sam Fiedler and Elli Kluegel rounded out the scoring with one goal apiece.

Defensively, senior Kady Glynn turned back 10 shots for her fourth double-digit save game of the season.

Sammy Mueller led all players with four goals, while Avery Shoemaker tacked on three for the Cavaliers (7-2).

Virginia struck first, but Rosenzweig rolled the crease and scored to tie the game at 24:19. She then assisted VanThof, who fired a rocket into the back of the net at 23:08, giving Loyola its first lead, 2-1.

Goals from Kluegel, Fiedler and Cooper pushed Loyola's lead to 5-1 at the 11-minute mark, but a pair of Cavalier goals halted Loyola's five-goal run.

VanThof kept Virginia from scoring three-straight, striking for a second time at 8:40, and then Powers answered the Cavaliers' next goal just 40 seconds after they scored, as Cooper gave up a free position attempt to assist Powers for her 41st-straight game with a point.

That would be all of the first-half scoring, as Loyola took a 7-4 advantage into the break.

An errant pass as time expired on the shot clock gave the Greyhounds their first goal of the second half, but two-straight by the Cavaliers cut their deficit to two, 8-6, with 23:09 to go.

Kluegel then gave up her free position opportunity to get Loyola its next goal, as a series of quick passes led to Fiedler finding Cooper for the open goal at 21:55. It was all Cavaliers after that though, as they won the final seven draw controls and scored six-straight goals to flip its 9-6 deficit into a 12-9 victory.

The Greyhounds will remain on the road as they travel to Army West Point on Saturday for the Patriot League opener. Game time is slated for 1 p.m. at Michie Stadium.
