ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Senior
Bri Betz-White led all players with 16 points, junior
Stephanie Karcz grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds and the Loyola University Maryland women's basketball team converted free throws down the stretch to hold off Navy for a 55-50 victory over the Midshipmen at Alumni Hall Saturday night.
Â
In addition to Betz-White's 16 points, freshman
Taleah Dixon added 13 and sophomore
Delaney Connolly chipped in 11.
Â
Karcz also finished with a game-high seven steals to move her season total to 115, four shy of breaking Katie Sheahin's school record of 118 in 2010-11. With 303 steals throughout her career, she becomes just the second player in program history to amass 300 steals, as Sheahin holds the school record at 347 steals from 2009-13.
Â
Jennifer Coleman led Navy with 16 points and Kolbi Green finished with 13. Laurel Jaunich led the Mids with 11 rebounds.
Â
The Greyhounds fell behind early and ultimately found themselves trailing Navy, 19-10, at the end of the first quarter. Loyola chipped away at its deficit though and pulled within five after opening the quarter on a 7-2 run. A pair of Connolly free throws answered Navy's jumper before back-to-back baskets from Betz-White moved Loyola within three, 26-23.
Â
Dixon then answered the Mids' jumper with five-straight points to pull Loyola even at the half, 28-28.
Â
Betz-White started the second half scoring and gave the Greyhounds their first lead of the game, 30-28, but Navy strung together eight-straight points to earn a 38-30 advantage. A pair of free throws by Connolly sparked a 9-2 Greyhound run that cut their deficit to one, at 40-39, before the Midshipmen made a layup to stretch their lead back to three, 42-39. Betz-White closed out the quarter with a free throw and then opened the fourth with a jumper to pull the Greyhounds even again, this time at 42-42.
Â
Betz-White answered Navy's next layup with a jumper before junior
Alexis Gray's 3-pointer at the 8:13 mark of the fourth quarter gave Loyola a 47-44 advantage. That would be the second of four lead changes in the fourth quarter, as the Mids pulled ahead at 50-49. Dixon then converted a pair of free throws to flip the lead back to Loyola, 51-50, and it would be all Greyhounds after that, as junior
Hannah Niles secured a defensive rebound on Navy's next possession and then Betz-White knocked down a pair of free throws at the other end, giving Loyola a 53-50 lead with 24 seconds to play.
Â
The Mids committed a turnover on their next possession and Dixon sealed the win for the Greyhounds by hitting each of her final two free throws with five seconds to play.
Â
Loyola will close out its regular season on Wednesday when it travels to Boston University for a 7 p.m. tip.
