BALTIMORE - The 11th-ranked Loyola University Maryland women's lacrosse team scored 11 goals on its first 13 shots to cruise to a 16-6 win over No. 12 Navy Saturday afternoon at Ridley Athletic Complex. With the win, the Greyhounds take over sole possession of first place in the Patriot League standings and are in control of hosting the upcoming Patriot League Championships.
Senior
Hannah Powers led all players with five goals and seven points, while sophomore
Livy Rosenzweig added one goal and a game-high five assists and classmate
Sam Fiedler finished with three goals and two assists.
Freshman
Jillian Wilson also contributed a hat trick for Loyola (9-3 overall, 5-0 Patriot League), scoring three times.
Elli Kluegel contributed two goals and senior
Taylor VanThof and sophomore
Emily Beier rounded out the scoring with one goal each.
Kelly Larkin led Navy (9-3, 4-1) with two goals and one assists, while Marina Lazarides added one goal and one assist.
Goals from Kluegel, Powers and Beier gave the Greyhounds a 3-0 lead less than five minutes into play, before Irwin got the Mids on the board at 21:14.
VanThof and Rosenzweig then assisted Powers and Wilson, respectively, to increase Loyola's lead to 5-1, before Larkin sandwiched a pair of goals around one from Powers to pull Navy within three, 6-3, at the 11:45 mark.
That wouldn't quiet Loyola though, as the Greyhounds got goals from Wilson, Fiedler, VanThof and Powers – the last two assisted by Rosenzweig – to increase their lead to 10-3 with 5:07 to play in the first half. Navy struck at 2:51, but Powers got the goal back, scoring her fifth of the day just 12 seconds before halftime, to send Loyola into the break with an 11-4 advantage.
Kluegel again struck first in the second half, scoring at 28:02, followed by goals from Fiedler and Wilson to build Loyola's lead to double digits, 14-4 at 23:19. Navy's goal at 19:01 brought it back to single digits, but Fiedler and Rosenzweig's goals at 16:05 and 10:09 put the game out of reach for the Mids.
Navy rounded out the scoring with a free position goal at 4:35.
Defensively for the Greyhounds, seniors
Kady Glynn and
Kristen Yanchoris and freshman
Katie Detwiler finished with three ground balls each. Senior
Lindsey Ehrhardt also added two ground balls and a game-high three caused turnovers.
Loyola will step out of conference play for its next contest, as the Greyhounds head to No. 15 Princeton on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. contest.
