No. 2 Men’s Lacrosse Holds Off Georgetown For 16-14 Win

BALTIMORE – Loyola University Maryland took an 11-6 halftime lead behind five first-half goals by Kevin Lindley, but Georgetown University opened the third quarter on a 4-1 run, eventually pulling within a goal twice in the fourth before the second-ranked Greyhounds secured a 16-14 non-conference victory at Ridley Athletic Complex.

Lindley finished with six goals and an assist, while Aidan Olmstead had a pair of goals and a career-high six assists. Chase Scanlan added four goals and an assist, and Pat Spencer totaled two goals and three assists.

Jacob Stover made 12 of his 16 saves in the second-half, and Bailey Savio went 18 of 33 on faceoffs and picked up a career-high 13 ground balls.

The Hoyas (8-4 overall) scored the game's first two goals in the opening five minutes, but Olmstead and Lindley teamed to score the next three goals. Olmstead had an unassisted tally at 8:20, and Lindley then scored twice off Olmstead assists to put the Greyhounds in front with 5:53 to go in the first quarter.

Masimo Bucci scored less than three minutes later to knot the score at 3-3, but Lindley and Spencer each scored unassisted before the end of the quarter to put the Greyhounds (9-2) in front 5-3 at the break.

Jake Carraway scored his first of five goals 1:56 into the second quarter to pull the Hoyas within a goal, but Loyola reeled off the next three. All three goals were assisted as Olmstead, Dan Wigley and Scanlan each scored within 72 seconds of each other.

Bucci broke the run for Georgetown with a goal at 11:06, but Lindley then scored two more at 8:39 and 7:28 to put the Greyhounds up five, 10-5.

Daniel Bucaro scored with 2:20 on the clock to trim the deficit to four, but Scanlan caught an Olmstead pass and scored low with 22 ticks left in the first half.

The Hoyas, however, scored three times in the third quarter's first six-plus minutes with Carraway's second of two making it a 11-9 game.

Lindley tallied his sixth of the night on a Scanlan assist with 7:36 left in the frame, but Dylan Watson converted on extra-man for the Hoyas at 3:36, once again making it a two-goal game.

After a Savio face-off win, Spencer scored unassisted at 2:48, and Olmstead assisted on a Peter Swindell tally with 48 seconds left in the third, pushing the lead to 14-10.

The Hoyas, however, got a transition goal from Patrick Aslanian with three seconds left in the period, sparking a three goal run that would see Watson and Carraway also score. Carraway's goal with 5:32 left in the fourth made it 14-13 Greyhounds.

Loyola padded its lead less than two minutes later when Olmstead restarted quickly from the end line and hit Scanlan for a goal at 3:39.

The Hoyas, however, answered 47 seconds later as Carraway scored on a high bouncer, cutting their deficit to 15-14.

Georgetown won the ensuing face-off and had possession in its offensive end. Stover, however, made saves on two Carraway shots from the left side, picking off the second cleanly to start a clear for the Greyhounds.

Loyola wound time off the clock before the Hoyas were flagged for a pushing penalty with 40 seconds on the clock. Spencer carried the ball for Loyola after the restart, and after he was doubled on the left side with the goal riding, he flipped a long pass to Scanlan who scored with 23 seconds left to add an insurance tally.

The Greyhounds finished with 11 caused turnovers, one off their season-high. Ryan McNulty led the way with three, while Spencer and Matt Higgins each had two.

Loyola starts a three-game road trip on Saturday, April 13, when it heads to Boston University for a 12 noon game against the Terriers.
