BALTIMORE – Loyola University Maryland women's lacrosse head coach
Jen Adams and former Greyhound All-American Stacey Morlang Sullivan, who were appointed co-head coaches of the U19 Australian Women's National Team two years ago, are set to lead the squad at the 2019 U19 World Championship this August.
The tournament will take place from August 1-10 in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada, with Australia beginning play with a Pool A contest against the United States on August 2. A total of 22 teams will take part in the competition. Australia, the United States, England and host Canada are the four participants in Pool A.
This will be Adams' third time on the U19 team's coaching staff, as she served as an assistant under her older sister, Trish, at the 2011 and 2015 world championships. Morlang Sullivan, who returned to Australia to coach after several seasons assisting at Loyola, is a part of the national team staff for the first time. The U19 squad arrived in Baltimore last Wednesday night, and took part in several training sessions at Ridley Athletic Complex prior to departing for Canada.
Both Adams and Morlang Sullivan were All-World players for Australia, helping the squad win a combined six medals in international competition, including a gold medal at the 2005 FIL Women's Lacrosse World Cup in Annapolis, Maryland.
At Loyola, Morlang Sullivan was one of the most successful student-athletes in program history. A three-time All-American, she led the team to back-to-back national semifinal appearances in 2000 and 2001, and she became the Greyhounds' first Tewaaraton Award finalist for national player of the year. Morlang Sullivan, who was inducted into the Loyola Athletics Hall of Fame in 2016, continues to rank third all-time in team history in goals (221) and fourth in points (288).
Adams has returned Loyola to its status as a regular national contender since taking over as head coach in 2009. The Greyhounds have advanced to eight NCAA tournaments, reaching the quarterfinal stage on three occasions. They have dominated against conference opponents, going 79-12 overall in her 11 seasons at the helm, including a 52-0 mark vs. Patriot League teams during the regular season since joining the conference in 2014.
The preliminary round of the 2019 World Championship will take place from August 1-5, with 16 of 22 teams advancing to the playoff bracket. The tournament final is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Saturday, August 10.
The U19 World Championships have been contested every four years since 1995, when Adams led Australia to a 5-4 victory over the United States in the inaugural final. The U.S. won each of the next four world titles, topping Australia in the championship game each time, before Canada claimed its first-ever championship at the most-recent tournament in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 2015.
