Quick Hits About The 'Hounds

  • Loyola makes a second attempt to open up its 2019 season on Sunday, as the Greyhounds welcome Big East member Seton Hall to Ridley Athletic Complex for a 1 p.m. non-conference matchup which will be streamed live on the Patriot League Network.
  • Loyola held a 1-0 lead over St. Francis late in the first half on Thursday night, but persistent thunderstorms around Baltimore forced the cancellation of both teams' season opener.
  • The Greyhounds return seven starters from a 2018 squad which finished 6-10-1 (2-6-1 Patriot League). Two of the team's four All-Patriot League performers from a year ago are back this fall. So. F Sarah Bayer was a second team honoree, while Sr. M Hannah Hoefs landed on the third team.
  • The Greyhounds were projected to finish seventh out of 10 teams in the Preseason Patriot League poll. Loyola is looking for its first playoff appearance since reaching the Patriot League semifinals in 2015.

Series History

  • This will be the third meeting between the two teams, with the sides trading 1-0 decisions over the past two seasons.
  • A 72nd minute penalty kick from Eva Gonzalez accounted for the lone strike during a 1-0 home win for Seton Hall last August. Shots were even at 13 apiece, while Loyola earned four of the game's seven corner kicks.
  • The Greyhounds topped the Pirates by a 1-0 final in overtime during the first matchup between the teams on Aug. 24, 2017. Current Sr. D Mary Theresa Corcoran provided the heroics at Ridley in that contest, as she headed in the game winner 3:54 into extra time.

About The Pirates

  • Seton Hall finished 2018 with a record of 2-12-4, including an 0-9 mark against Big East competition. The Pirates were limited to seven goals in 18 games on the year, and their 0.39 goals per game ranked tied for 330th out of 333 schools in Division I.
  • The Pirates were shutout 12 times, including seven of the team's last nine games.
  • Seton Hall will need to replace departed senior GK Anna MacLean, who made 81 saves overall and ranked third in the Big East in saves per game (4.76).
  • Ciara Crinion, a 2010 graduate of Central Connecticut State, enters her first season as head coach after seven years as an assistant at Hartford.
Promising Start vs. St. Francis
  • Loyola needed only 1:50 to get on the scoreboard during its home opener vs. St. Francis on Thursday which was ultimately cancelled due to lightning. So. M Sarah Mirr scored the goal, as she directed a rebound into the back of the net after Hoefs' initial effort was blocked.
  • The Greyhounds led 8-3 in shots, and they held a 5-2 edge in shots on goal.
  • Making her first start since Oct. 29, 2016 at Holy Cross, Sr. GK Lily Andres made a pair of saves in 37:01 minutes of game action to keep St. Francis off the scoreboard.
Mallia Back in Baltimore
  • This is new head coach Joe Mallia's 12th season associated with Loyola women's soccer. He was an assistant from 1994-97, helping the program claim two MAAC titles during that span, prior to taking over the head role from 1998-2004 and winning five more conference championships. Mallia is the winningest coach in team history at 87-45-8.
  • Prior to rejoining Loyola, Mallia was an assistant at UCLA (2005-06), Tennessee (2012-15) and Navy (2016-18), and he served as head coach at Loyola Marymount (2007-11).
