BALTIMORE – Loyola University Maryland women's soccer returns to action this weekend for its final pair of games prior to the start of Patriot League play. The Greyhounds host VMI at Ridley on Friday before traveling up I-95 to face Penn on Sunday afternoon.

Sunday begins a three-game road trip, with games at Lehigh (Sept. 21) and Delaware State (Sept. 24) to follow.


Last Time Out

  • Marist scored a pair of goals in the final 15 minutes of regulations, including the go-ahead strike with seven seconds remaining, to rally for a 2-1 home victory over Loyola last Sunday afternoon.
  • Hannah Hoefs opened the scoring for the Greyhounds in the seventh minute, curling a shot into the top right corner from 30 yards out.
  • Loyola led 1-0 at halftime, with advantages in both shots (5-3) and corner kicks (6-3).
  • The Red Foxes outshot the visitors 7-2 after the intermission. Kaylin Sperley tied the score on a penalty kick at 75:59, while Kristen Prevosto headed in the game winner.

Hoefs Ranked Among Patriot League Leaders

  • Hannah Hoefs has totaled seven points (3 G, 1 A) in Loyola's first five games this season. She leads all Patriot League scorers in points per game (1.4) and ranks tied for second in the conference in goals.
  • A third team All-Patriot League selection in 2018, Hoefs has 13 points (5 G, 3 A) in Loyola's last seven games dating back to last season.

Series History

  • Friday will be the first ever meeting between Loyola and VMI. It it also Loyola's first matchup against any of the 10 schools currently affiliated with the Southern Conference.
  • Loyola trails 4-2 in the all-time series against Penn. The Quakers earned a 1-0 victory in the most-recent meeting in Philadelphia on Oct. 6, 2014.
  • The Greyhounds' last victory over Penn was a 3-0 home triumph on Sept. 28, 2005. That was the third of 11 consecutive victories for Loyola that season, the third-longest winning streak in program history.
About the Keydets and Quakers
  • VMI (1-4) has dropped three-straight games by a combined 6-0 margin since earning its lone victory at Delaware State on Aug. 29. The Keydets have been shutout in all four of their defeats on the year.
  • This will be VMI's second Patriot League opponent of the season after dropping a 2-0 decision at American on Aug. 31.
  • VMI was ranked 10th out of 10 schools in the 2019 Southern Conference preseason poll. The Keydets started last season 6-0-1, but went 1-9-1 over its final 11 contests, including an 0-8-1 mark against conference opponents during the regular season.
  • Penn holds a 2-1-1 record entering a Friday night contest at Bucknell, with the lone defeat a 5-1 setback at No. 3 Stanford to begin the season.
  • The Quakers own victories over Towson (2-0) and Mount St. Mary's (1-0), with a 1-1 draw against Fairfield taking place in between those two wins.
  • Penn went 13-2-1 (5-1-1) last season, finishing tied for first with Princeton in the Ivy League regular season standings. The Quakers were ranked second out of eight teams in the conference's preseason poll.
  • Penn led Division I in goals-against average, save percentage and shutout percentage last season, allowing just five goals across 16 games.
