BALTIMORE – Loyola University Maryland men's soccer, fresh off a 2-0 victory over defending Ivy League champions Princeton on Saturday, begins its quest to top the Patriot League standings for a third-straight year on Saturday, as the Greyhounds host Army West Point at 1 p.m.

Last Time Out

  • Barry Sharifi and Nico Brown scored goals during a span of 14:11 in the second half, while Chase Vosvick made four saves to pick up his 15th career shutout in Loyola's win over Princeton in its 2019 home opener at Ridley Athletic Complex.
  • Davey Mason set up Sharifi's goal in the 63rd minute, while Justin Ingram assisted on Brown's first strike of the year with 13:19 remaining in regulation.
  • Sharifi became the first Greyhound to score multiple goals this season, and he now has 15 goals overall during his time at Loyola.

Series History

  • Army leads 4-2-1 in a series which began with Loyola joining the Patriot League in 2013.
  • Loyola will be looking to avenge a 1-0 defeat to the Black Knights in last year's Patriot League semifinal matchup at Ridley. The Greyhounds had advantages in shots (10-7) and corner kicks (12-0), but Army advanced through an 82nd minute goal by Keenan O'Shea.
  • Loyola had won the previous two meetings, topping Army by scores of 2-0 and 2-1 in the 2018 and 2017 regular seasons, respectively.
  • Barry Sharifi and Josh Fawole provided the goals in last year's regular season matchup at Army on Oct. 7.

About the Black Knights

  • Army (2-1-1) is unbeaten in three straight after beginning the year with a 2-1 loss at No. 19 Air Force. The Black Knights topped Mount St. Mary's by a 1-0 final in their most-recent contest on Tuesday.
  • O'Shea and senior Zac McGraw were both chosen as first team All-Patriot League performers in 2018. McGraw was named the conference's Preseason Defensive Player of the Year this August.
  • After upsetting Loyola in the semifinals, Army fell 1-0 to Colgate in the 2018 Patriot League championship game.
Loyola Racks Up Weekly Patriot League Honors
  • Loyola players accounted for three of the Patriot League's five weekly award winners on Monday, as Barry Sharifi was named Midfielder of the Week, Chase Vosvick was chosen as Goalkeeper of the Week and Davey Mason added Defender of the Week accolades.
  • Sharifi (8x midfielder) and Vosvick (5x goalkeeper, 3x rookie) each received their eighth-career weekly award from the conference. Mason picked up his second-career Defender of the Week honor.
  • Nico Brown was also included among the honorable mention selections for the week after providing the insurance goal in Loyola's 2-0 win over Princeton.
Greyhounds vs. The Patriot League
  • Loyola is 20-4-3 (10-2-2 at Ridley Athletic Complex) in the regular season against Patriot League opponents over the past three years under head coach Steve Nichols
  • The Greyhounds are looking for their first postseason Patriot League championship. They were ranked first with 12 out of 20 first-place votes in this year's Patriot League preseason poll.

  • In addition to his Patriot League Defender of the Week award, Davey Mason was one of 11 players named to TopDrawerSoccer.com's Division I Team of the Week on Tuesday. He has points in two-straight games after scoring a late equalizer in the second half at James Madison on Sept. 8.
  • That James Madison squad, which Loyola took to double overtime before falling 3-2 on the road, upset No. 1-ranked Wake Forest by a 1-0 final on Tuesday night. The Greyhounds travel to Wake Forest for a non-conference matchup on Tuesday, Oct. 22.
