Saramago’s Hat Trick Lifts Men’s Soccer Past Army, 4-0

BALTIMORE – Brian Saramago netted his third collegiate hat trick, as Loyola University Maryland men's soccer posted a convincing 4-0 victory over Army West Point to begin Patriot League play at Ridley Athletic Complex on Saturday.

Saramago scored the final three goals after Justin Ingram delivered the opener off a penalty kick. The Greyhounds (2-4, 1-0 Patriot League), avenged a 1-0 defeat to the Black Knights (2-2-1, 0-1 Patriot League) in last year's conference semifinals. Chase Vosvick made five saves to record his second-straight shutout in goal.

The home side was up 2-0 before the game was 10 minutes old. Barry Sharifi drew a foul in the box following a corner kick 7:10 into the contest, and Ingram calmly steered the resulting PK into the left corner for his first goal at Loyola.

Just 1:25 later, Saramago doubled the advantage with his first goal of 2019. Sharifi delivered a pass from the right side and Saramago beat goalkeeper Justin Stoll in a 1-on-1 situation, as Loyola's two All-Americans from 2018 teamed up on a strike for the second time this season.

The Greyhound backline limited Army to just one shot on goal in the opening 45 minutes. The best scoring chance for the visitors came three minutes after the intermission, as Vosvick pushed aside an off-angle effort from Sam Epitime which was heading for the top left corner.

Saramago's final two goals came within 1:12 of each other later in the frame. Jacob Denison and Davey Mason had the assists on his strike in the 80th minute. Mason led Saramago in on a long-distance pass from beyond midfield, and Saramago did the rest, maneuvering around Stoll and converting into the empty net.

Mason now has points in three-consecutive games, with a goal and two assists during that span, while Denison recorded his second collegiate assist.

Ingram and Jonathan Sousa set up Saramago's third goal, with Sousa sending in a long ball from the right side which was headed past Stoll. Sousa picked up his first assist since Oct. 15, 2016 at Lehigh.

Saramago upped his career goals total to 29, moving him into a tie with Mark Hopper (1988-91) for 17th in program history. His other hat tricks came against Mount St. Mary's last season and at home versus Boston University as a freshman in 2016.

Vosvick's shutout, the 16th of his Greyhound career, was secured after Army sent a penalty kick high with 1:36 remaining.

Loyola is back on the road on Tuesday, traveling to William & Mary for a non-conference tilt scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
