BALTIMORE – Kateri Martin and Abigail Thornton teamed to take second place this weekend at the Loyola Women's Tennis Invitational at the McClure Tennis Center at Ridley Athletic Complex.

Both Martin and Thornton won each three of their four singles matches at the event, and they split four doubles contests.

The duo swept a Lafayette College pair on Friday in the first round, winning 6-4 in doubles. Martin was then a 6-0, 6-1 winner in singles, while Thornton got by her opponent, 6-2, 6-1. They matched up against a George Mason pair in the quarterfinals, falling 6-2 in doubles before coming back with two singles wins to advance. Martin won 6-4, 6-2, and Thornton was a 6-3, 6-2 winner.

They continued a stretch of three-straight matches against teams from George Mason University in the semifinals, winning 6-3 in doubles, and Martin clinched the victory with a 3-0, default (injury) win in singles. In Sunday's championship round, they were edged 7-5 in doubles by another Patriots pair, Paige La and Hannah Yang. Thornton beat Yang, 6-2 in the first set of singles before Yang bowed out due to an injury, but La slipped past Martin, 7-5, 6-2.

Lin Robertson and Alexandria Agee won three of their four matches to take fifth at the event, sweeping a Mount St. Mary's University pair in the first round. They were then downed, 3-0, in the quarterfinals by a Lafayette College, but they rallied to win their last two matches.

Facing a different Leopards duo on Saturday, they lost, 6-1, in doubles, but Robertson delivered a 6-2, 6-0 victory in singles, and Agee clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-3 win. Sunday in the fifth-place match, they outlasted a George Mason team, 7-6 (4) in doubles, and Robertson won her third of four singles matches this weekend, beating her opponent 6-2, 6-3.

Sydney Lund and Taylor Kuncl finished eighth at the event for the Greyhounds. They used a 6-1 win in doubles to propel themselves forward in the opening round against Mount St. Mary's as Lund also won a singles match, 6-0, 6-4. After falling to George Mason in the quarterfinals, they fell, 2-1, to another Patriots team on Saturday with Lund picking up another singles victory. Sunday in their final match, Kuncl outlasted her Lafayette counterpart, 6-7 (2), 7-5, (10-4) in singles.

After falling in Friday's first round, the trio of Sandra Aguirre, Abby Decker and Julia Thompson battled their way through three wins in the consolation bracket to finish ninth overall. Decker and Aguirre combined for a 7-6 (5) consolation quarterfinals win over Mount St. Mary's in doubles, and Decker then won 6-0, default, in singles while Aguirre was a 6-0, 6-1 victor. Decker's 6-3, 6-2 win in singles helped them win in the consolation semifinals, and they beat a Lafayette team, 2-1, in the final.

Brooke Santoriello and Genevieve Wurtz won their final two matches of the weekend to take 13th overall. They swept a team on Saturday afternoon before winning, 3-0, against Mount St. Mary's on Sunday.
