Karcz Records 400th Steal, Boston U Holds Off Women’s Basketball Late

BOSTON – Stephanie Karcz became just the 27th player in NCAA Division I women's basketball history to reach 400 career steals, highlighting an otherwise tough night for Loyola University Maryland in a 44-42 defeat at Boston University on Wednesday.

The Greyhounds (3-13, 0-5 Patriot League) held an 18-6 advantage at the end of the first quarter, but were limited to 24 points the rest of the way. Katie Nelson contributed 20 points, while Sydney Johnson added 16 to make up a majority of the offense for the Terriers (8-8, 3-2).

Karcz's milestone theft came with 8:09 remaining in regulation. She finished the contest with nine points, 10 rebounds, three assists and three steals. Delaney Connolly chipped in a team-best 11 points (3-4 3FG) to go along with six boards.

BU used a 17-5 second quarter to overcome its early deficit and enter the intermission deadlocked at 23-23. The home side then held a 44-34 lead with under three minutes remaining in the fourth.

Back-to-back 3-pointers by Emily McAteer began a late rally attempt for Loyola. A Karcz steal and resulting layup reduced the margin down to 44-42 with 44 seconds left, and another Karcz theft gave the visitors a chance to tie or take the lead on the final possession. A jumper from the corner fell short, however, allowing BU to hold on for the victory.

Both teams shot under 35 percent from the field. The Terriers came out on top despite going 9 for 21 (42.9 percent) from the free throw line.

This is the second steals milestone of the season for Karcz, as she set the Loyola all-time record in a non-conference game against Wright State on Nov. 30. Karcz is also now up to 351 career assists, moving her past Mary Thompson (1990-94) for sixth in team history and putting her within one of tying Katie Sheahin (2009-13) in fifth.

Loyola, which has dropped its first five conference games by a combined 18 points, will try to get in the win column on Saturday afternoon with a 1 p.m. Alumnae Day home matchup against Army West Point.
