American Pulls Away from Women’s Basketball in Fourth Quarter

WASHINGTON – Indeya Sanders scored seven of her game-high 18 points in the fourth quarter, leading American to a 63-44 victory over Loyola University Maryland on Wednesday.

Sanders added 10 rebounds and three assists for the Eagles (7-10, 3-4 Patriot League), who outscored the Greyhounds (4-14, 1-6) by a 23-5 margin over the final 10 minutes. Kaitlyn Marenyi and Maddie Doring chipped in 11 points each for the home side.

Stephanie Karcz once again flirted with a triple-double for Loyola, as she totaled eight points, 11 rebounds, eight steals and three steals in the defeat. Karcz is up to 111 steals this season, already the sixth most in Patriot League history, and her 422 career thefts are tied for 18th all-time in Division I.

Alexis Gray supplied 11 points for the Greyhounds, reaching double figures for a fifth time this season.

Loyola held a 15-9 advantage at the end of the first quarter, and took its largest lead of eight points after Emily McAteer sank a pair of free throws to begin the second.

The Eagles, though, followed with a 15-2 run to move in front, and they maintained a slim 30-28 edge heading into the intermission.

A back-and-forth third quarter ended with American ahead by just one point at 41-40. The Greyhounds fell behind in the fourth after shooting 1 for 15 from the field in the frame.

Nine different Loyola players scored in the defeat. McAteer and Laryn Edwards followed the top two Greyhound scorers with six points apiece.

Loyola is back at Reitz Arena on Saturday, hosting Bucknell at 2 p.m. as part of this year's Women in Sports Day. WISD activities get underway at 12 p.m., with free admission offered to all in attendance.
