Karcz Sets Another Steals Milestone, Women’s Basketball Tops American

BALTIMORE – Stephanie Karcz broke her own single-season steals record in the third quarter, and she led three Loyola University Maryland players in double figures during a 56-47 win over American at Reitz Arena on Wednesday.

Karcz totaled 11 points, a season-high 15 rebounds, five assists and a pair of thefts for the Greyhounds (7-16, 4-8 Patriot League), who earned their first victory over the Eagles (9-13, 5-7) since 2016. Delaney Connolly and Hannah Niles added 10 points apiece for the home side.

The Division I leader in steals per game for a majority of the season, Karcz recorded her record-breaking 124th steal on the year 3:05 into the second half. She is up to 436 thefts for her career, a mark which remains 14th all-time in DI history. The double-double, meanwhile, was her 10th of the season and 29th overall at Loyola.

The Greyhounds used a balanced attack to knock off the Eagles, with Laryn Edwards supplying eight points and three assists while Ashley Hunter and Emily McAteer each chipped in six points off the bench.

Loyola never trailed in the second half after taking a 27-24 lead into the intermission. Edwards beat the buzzer on a layup which made it 42-36 at the end of the third, and the Greyhounds scored 10 of the first 14 points in the final quarter to increase the advantage up to 12 points at 52-40.

A stingy Loyola defense held the visitors to four points over the first 6:52 of the fourth, and American never got closer than seven in the closing minutes.

The Greyhounds finished with a 36-18 edge in the paint and forced 20 American turnovers. Tonight's win halts a seven-game American winning streak in the series and evens Loyola's record at Reitz Arena this season to 5-5.

Jade Edwards scored a game-high 22 points (7-13 FG, 4-7 3FG) and added nine rebounds for the Eagles.

The 2018 Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year, Karcz has 100+ steals in each of the past three seasons. She has also now grabbed double-digit rebounds in eight of the last nine games.

Loyola improves to 4-3 in its last seven games, and it has won four of its past five contests at home.

The Greyhounds return to the road for their next two matchups, beginning with a 2 p.m. tilt at Colgate on Saturday afternoon.
