BALTIMORE – Loyola University Maryland women's lacrosse, which was ranked No. 11 in the IWLCA preseason coaches' poll, kicks off its 2020 season with a 12 p.m. home matchup against No. 24 Johns Hopkins on Saturday afternoon.
Quick Notes
- The Greyhounds are projected to top the Patriot League standings for a seventh-consecutive season since joining the conference prior to the 2014 campaign.
- Loyola went 16-5 (9-0) last spring, winning its fourth Patriot League postseason championship in six seasons and advancing to the NCAA tournament for an eighth time in the last nine years.
- Johns Hopkins is the first of seven opponents on Loyola's schedule who were ranked in the IWLCA's preseason coaches' poll.
- Jr. A Livy Rosenzweig became the first Greyhound to achieve first team IWLCA All-America status since 2012 last season after breaking her own school record in points (116, 46 G, 70 A) and also setting a new program mark in assists.
- Loyola led Division I in both assists per game (9.4) and shot percentage (51.3) in 2019, ranked seventh nationally in scoring margin (+6.8) and ninth in goals per game (15.9).
- Loyola holds an overall mark of 153-66 (79-12 conference) in 11 seasons under head coach Jen Adams, posting winning records every year during her tenure.
- Adams has been named Patriot League Coach of the Year in five of Loyola's six seasons in the conference, including each of the last four years.
Preseason Individual Accolades
- Livy Rosenzweig was named a second team Preseason All-American by Inside Lacrosse back in January, joining Navy's Kelly Larkin as the lone Patriot League honorees.
- One of two Loyola players - male of female - to reach 100 points in a season, Rosenzweig has accomplished the feat in each of her first two collegiate seasons. She recorded multiple points in every game last spring and tallied 8+ points on six occasions.
- Rosenzweig was joined by Jr. M Sam Fiedler, Jr. M Elli Kluegel and So. D Katie Detwiler on the Preseason All-Patriot League team.
- Loyola's four selections were tied with Army for the most on the conference's 16-member Preseason All-League squad. Detwiler was the lone defender recognized.
Series History
- Loyola leads 14-5 in a series which dates back to 1975.
- The Greyhounds won the first 12 meetings, including all 11 during the period from 1975-82.
- Johns Hopkins has come out on top in 5 of 8 matchups since the series resumed in 2012, including victories in the last three contests.
- The Blue Jays used a 5-0 run to end the first half to help secure a 13-11 home win on Feb. 15 last season.
- Loyola's last win in the series was an 8-7 double overtime triumph at Hopkins on Feb. 14, 2016.
Scouting Johns Hopkins
- The Blue Jays (1-0) rallied from a 10-8 deficit midway through the second half to top Drexel by a 13-11 final in their season opener last Saturday.
- Johns Hopkins went 10-8 last season, falling 16-9 to Florida in the opening round of the NCAA tournament.
- Sr. A Maggie Schneidereith, Jr. M Shelby Harrison and Jr. D Jeanne Kachris were all named to the Big Ten Preseason Players to Watch List.
- Schneidereith (48 G, 29 A) and Kachris (28 GB, 16 CT) were both All-Big Ten selections last spring. Harrison led the team and ranked fifth in the conference with 76 draw controls.
- The Blue Jays have advanced to the NCAA tournament in five of the last six seasons overall. They were ranked fifth out of seven teams in this year's Big Ten preseason poll.
Home Sweet Home
- Loyola went a perfect 10-0 at Ridley Athletic Complex last season, a run which culminated with a 21-9 victory over Navy in the Patriot League final.
- The Greyhounds won all 10 games by at least three goals and won five games against nationally-ranked opposition (Navy 2x, Florida, Penn State, Georgetown).
- Loyola is 72-22 overall at home since its first contest at Ridley on March 16, 2010.
Rosenzweig Chasing More History
- Livy Rosenzweig already holds school records in single-season points (116) and assists (70) and single-game assists (8).
- She enters her junior season ranked fourth all-time at Loyola in assists (117), fourth in draw controls (174) and ninth in points (218).
- Rosenzweig is 32 assists away from surpassing Annie Thomas' school-record of 148. She also ranks sixth in Patriot League history, and is 14 away from moving past former teammate Hannah Powers into the top five.
- Rosenzweig has recorded points in 41 of 42 collegiate games, including each of the last 34 contests.
Fiedler Looks to Build on Breakout Year
- Sam Fiedler earned first team All-Patriot League and second team IWLCA All-Region accolades following a sophomore season in which she totaled 79 points (53 G, 26 A) while leading DI with a .671 shot percentage.
- Fiedler also led the Patriot League in ground balls (51) and ranked tied for fourth in the conference in goals. She contributed 10 hat tricks, nine multiple assist games and 13 games with 4+ points.
- Fiedler enters 2020 with the longest active team streaks in games with at least one point (35) and games with at least one goal (33). At 83 career goals, she is 17 away from becoming the 31st player in program history to reach 100 in her collegiate career.
New Look in Goal
- There will be a new primary goalie for the Greyhounds this season, as three-year starter Kady Glynn departs after earning Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year honors in 2019.
- A three-time All-Patriot League performer and a second team IWLCA All-Region honoree last spring, Glynn led the conference in goals-against average (9.60) and ranked second in save percentage (.475).
- Jr. GK Kaitlyn Larsson is expected to begin 2020 as the starter. She has logged 514 minutes across 26 appearances in her first two seasons, recording an impressive 5.95 goals-against average and .595 save percentage.
- Larsson has a 3-0 record at Loyola, earning victories against three nationally-ranked opponents in Towson, Virginia and Navy as a freshman.
- Freshman Amber Bustard, a three-time Baltimore Sun All-Metro selection at Roland Park Country School, will also push for playing time in goal this spring.
Patriot League Dominance
- Loyola is 52-0 against Patriot League opponents in regular season play since joining the conference. That run is the longest active win streak in Division I.
- The NCAA record for consecutive conference wins is a 61-game streak by UMass in Atlantic 10 play which began in 2011 and ended on April 22, 2018.
- The Greyhounds claimed Patriot League championships in each of their first three years in the conference (2014-16), and added a fourth postseason title last spring.
- In its 11 games against conference foes last season (regular and postseason), Loyola outscored its opponent by a 207-78 margin. Seven of 11 victories were by double digits, with the closest margin a 13-6 win over Lehigh on March 23.
Gone But Not Forgotten
- Loyola loses eight letterwinners from last year's Patriot League-championship team, including seven starters, five All-Patriot League performers and three IWLCA All-Americans.
- Hannah Powers, a 2019 third team IWLCA All-American, concluded her career as Loyola's all-time leader with 317 points (187 G, 130 A). She ranks fourth all-time in the Patriot League in points and fifth in assists.
- Taylor VanThof, a 2019 second team IWLCA All-American and the PL Midfielder of the Year, graduated as the program's career (392), single season (146) and single game (21) record holder for draw controls, as she became the first player in program history to win at least 100 draws in three different seasons.
- Lindsay Ehrhardt, a 2019 second team IWLCA All-American and the PL Defensive Player of the Year, ranked seventh in Division I with 45 caused turnovers.
- Kady Glynn was the 2019 PL Goalkeeper of the Year and a two-time first team All-Patriot League selection, while Kristen Yanchoris was the 2019 PL Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year and a four-time All-Patriot League honoree.
- Other departed seniors include Emily Cooper (40 G, 3 A in 2019), Katie Korvin (20 GS on defense) and Amanda Ingnacio (18 GP, 14 G).
2019 Starters Kluegel, Detwiler, Beier All Back this Spring
- Elli Kluegel, Katie Detwiler and Jr. A Emily Beier join Livy Rosenzweig and Sam Fiedler as returning starters from last year's squad.
- A two-year starter, Kluegel has totaled 64 goals and six assists in her first two seasons at Loyola. She ranked fifth on the team with 35 goals in 2019.
- Kluegel was also a CoSIDA Academic All-District and Academic All-Patriot League performer. A biology major, she holds a perfect 4.0 GPA through her first five semesters on campus.
- Detwiler was the lone freshman to start all 21 games last season, earning second team All-Patriot League status while totaling 24 ground balls and 12 caused turnovers.
- Beier registered 16 points (7 G, 9 A) while starting 20 of 21 contests in 2019.
Eleven Newcomers Join Program for 2020
- The Greyhounds will have 11 new faces on this year's roster, with sophomore transfer Shay Clevenger and 10 freshmen joining the program this spring.
- Clevenger spent the 2019 season at Louisville, starting all 18 games as a defender for the Cardinals. She tied for the team lead and ranked seventh overall in the ACC with 37 ground balls.
- Loyola's 10-member freshmen class includes four midfielders, three attackers, two defenders and one goalkeeper.
- Twins Logan Olmstead and Riley Olmstead are the younger sisters of Loyola men's lacrosse junior attacker Aidan Olmstead.
2020 Captains
Pro Hounds
- The Women's Professional Lacrosse League wrapped up its second season last summer, with eight former Greyhounds and current assistant coach Dana Dobbie all competing at the highest level.
- Dobbie, a team captain for the WPLL champion Baltimore Brave, topped Lindsay Ehrhardt '19 and the New York Fight in the 2019 title game.
- Katrina Geiger '18, Hannah Powers '19 and Taylor VanThof '19 suited up for the Philadelphia Fire, Molly Hulseman '15 and Molly Wolf '16 played on the Upstate Pride, and Taryn VanThof '15 and Bailey Mathis '17 were on the New England Command.
- Loyola head coach Jen Adams serves as the league's commissioner.
