GAINESVILLE, Fla. –
Sam Fiedler opened the scoring 2:24 into the opening half of No. 12 Loyola University Maryland's road matchup at No. 4 Florida. When the final horn sounded, she had single-handedly outscored the Gators.
Fiedler finished with eight points, including a career-high seven goals, as the Greyhounds rolled to a 17-6 victory on Saturday to remain unbeaten on the year. The 11-goal margin was Loyola's largest ever against a top-five opponent.
Livy Rosenzweig added three goals and three assists, while
Elli Kluegel totaled three goals and an assist for Loyola (3-0), which topped Florida (2-1) for a second-consecutive season and earned the program's first win in Gainesville.
The Gators were coming off a 15-14 win at then-No. 1 Maryland, last year's national champions, the previous Saturday. They trailed throughout this one, as Loyola scored seven of the game's first nine goals and never looked back.
Fiedler and Kluegel both had two goals apiece in that opening 7-2 run. After back-to-back Florida strikes pulled the home side within three, the Greyhounds went on a 9-0 run which spanned over 20 minutes of game action.
Fiedler's previous career scoring high was five, a mark she had reached two times previously. Her sixth was set up by
Jillian Wilson with 23:03 remaining in regulation, while Rosenzweig assisted on her seventh with 16:07 on the clock. Fiedler now has points in 38-straight games, and she has scored at least one goal in 36 straight.
Kaitlyn Larsson finished with 11 saves in goal, reaching double figures for a third game in a row to begin 2020. Nine of her stops came in the first half, allowing Loyola to continue to build its advantage.
Katie Detwiler added a career-high six draw controls to go along with three ground balls and a caused turnover. On defense, Detwiler was matched up against Shannon Kavanagh, who was named IWLCA Offensive Player and US Lacrosse Player of the Week after scoring eight times against Maryland last Saturday. Kavanagh was limited to just two goals and two shots in today's contest.
Emily Wills (1 G, 2 A) and Wilson (2 G, 1 A) both chipped in three points offensively.
Bridget Ballard rounded out the scoring, while
Caitlyn Gunn (2) and
Holly Lloyd both supplied assists.
Loyola's previous largest win over a top-five team was a 16-6 triumph over No. 5 William & Mary on March 29, 1997. The Greyhounds picked up their 47th win over a ranked opponent in 11-plus seasons under head coach
Jen Adams.
Loyola remains on the road next weekend, traveling to Penn State for a matchup beginning at 1 p.m.
