UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – No. 5 Loyola University Maryland recorded its second-straight double-digit victory at a nationally-ranked opponent, as 11 different Greyhounds scored in Saturday's 22-12 win at No. 19 Penn State.
Loyola's 22 goals are its most in a game since April 28, 2018 at Holy Cross (23-3), and it's the most for the program against nationally-ranked opposition since a 23-5 win over No. 14 Towson on April 30, 1997.
Sam Fiedler led the offense with four goals and three assists, while
Livy Rosenzweig supplied one goal and a season-high five assists for the Greyhounds (4-0), who are off to their best start since 2011. This afternoon's win was their third straight over the Nittany Lions (3-1).
Little separated the two sides midway through the first half, with a goal by Penn State's Sophia Triandafils knotting the score at 5-5 with 14:53 remaining.
An unassisted goal by
Jillian Wilson at 13:28 began a stretch of four-consecutive Loyola strikes in a span of 2:39.
Emily Beier, Fiedler and
Elli Kluegel also scored during the run.
The Greyhounds ultimately took an 11-7 advantage into the intermission, and a
Sydney Foster goal 67 seconds after the break set the tone for the second half. Loyola would record 11 of the half's first 14 goals before two late Penn State tallies rounded out the scoring.
With her five assists, Rosenzweig moved past former teammate
Hannah Powers for No. 2 all-time at Loyola and No. 5 in Patriot League history with 132 career assists. She has now totaled 23 points (8 G, 15 A) in the season's first four games. Rosenzweig also matched her season-high with eight draw controls, helping the Greyhounds finish the afternoon with a 20-14 edge in that category.
Fiedler, who earned US Lacrosse National Player of the Week accolades after her eight-point performance (7 G, 1 A) at Florida last Saturday, matched her career-high with her three assists this weekend. She is up to 19 points (14 G, 5 A) on the year.
Kluegel (4 G), Wilson (3 G, 1 A),
Emily Wills (3 G) and
Holly Lloyd (2 G, 1 A) all finished with 3+ points in the victory. Kluegel's four goals were a new season high, while Wills has 13 points (9 G, 4 A) in her first four collegiate games.
Foster (1 G, 1 A), Beier (1 G, 1 A),
Bridget Ballard (1 G),
Caitlyn Gunn (1 G) and
Anna Ruby (1 G) also scored, with Ruby's first goal at Loyola finishing up the scoring for the visitors with 5:56 left in regulation.
Kaitlyn Larsson made eight saves, including seven in the first half, while playing the first 54:30 in goal. She was then relieved by
Amber Bustard, who made a pair of stops in her Loyola debut.
Katie Detwiler followed Rosenzweig with six draw controls, and she also had a pair of ground balls and one caused turnover. Wilson chipped in five draws and a team-high three caused turnovers.
Loyola's 4-0 start is its best since the 2011 squad started 12-0, and three of its four victories have come against nationally-ranked opponents. The Greyhounds posted a 17-6 win at then-No. 4 Florida last week, and topped then-No. 24 Johns Hopkins by a 16-7 margin to begin the year.
Loyola will remain on the road for its next contest, a 1 p.m. matchup at No. 12 Penn next Saturday.
