BALTIMORE –
Andrew Kostecka scored a game-high 20 points, leading four Loyola University Maryland players in double figures during a 78-65 victory over Bucknell at Reitz Arena on Saturday.
The Greyhounds (12-13, 4-8 Patriot League) have now won three games in a row overall. They topped the Bison (9-16, 5-7) for the first time since 2017 and a second time since joining the Patriot League prior to the 2013-14 season.
Loyola led for the final 34:51 of regulation and held a 40-27 advantage at the intermission, but Bucknell had pulled within one at 58-57 with just under five minutes remaining in the second half.
Kostecka responded with a key 3-pointer on the other end, beginning an 11-1 run which gave the home side some breathing room. He hit 5 of 7 field goal attempts and 9 of 10 shots from the free throw line while recording 20+ points for a 13th time this season. Kostecka added nine rebounds in the win, just missing out on his second double-double of the year.
KaVaughn Scott followed with 12 points, while
Santi Aldama and
Golden Dike each added 11. Scott and Dike were both a perfect 4 for 4 from the floor.
As a whole, Loyola shot 52.5 percent from the field while limiting Bucknell to a 31.3 percent output on the other end. The Bison were also successful on just 8 of 35 attempts from 3-point range (22.9 percent).
The Greyhounds spent plenty of time at the charity stripe, with their 46 attempts matching a season-high which was set in the previous meeting between the two sides on Jan. 25. Loyola converted on 34 of those attempts, including a 25 for 31 effort in the second half.
Aldama, who made his season debut last weekend against Navy in the first of Loyola's three-straight victories, added seven rebounds and a pair of blocks in the win. He has totaled 11 points in each of his first three collegiate games.
Avi Turner finished with a team-high 15 points for Bucknell, which dropped its fourth game in a row. John Meeks added 12 points and 12 boards for the visitors.
Loyola's last victory over the Bison was a 78-77 triumph on Feb. 15, 2017. Bucknell had won the last six meetings between the two sides entering this afternoon.
The Greyhounds will look to keep the momentum going on Wednesday, when they travel to American for a road matchup beginning at 7 p.m.
