BALTIMORE – The Tewaaraton Foundation released the final additions to its Watch List for the 2020 women's lacrosse Tewaaraton Award on Tuesday, with Loyola University Maryland sophomore defender
Katie Detwiler among those recognized.
The Foundation also announced this afternoon that Tewaaraton Award winners will not be chosen this spring due to the shortened season caused by the COVID-19 public health threat. Candidates added to the Watch List were selected based on their performances through games completed on March 11.
Detwiler (Devon, Pa./Archbishop John Carroll) becomes one of just three sophomores in Division I women's lacrosse recognized as candidates for the prestigious award. She joins junior teammates
Sam Fiedler and
Livy Rosenzweig, who were both included on this year's preseason Watch List.
Detwiler was the defensive leader for a Loyola squad which finished 2020 with a perfect 5-0 record, including four wins against nationally-ranked opponents. A three-time Patriot League Defender of the Week, she totaled 27 draw controls, 10 ground balls and four caused turnovers, and limited two Tewaaraton Watch List standouts in Johns Hopkins' Maggie Schneidereith and Florida's Shannon Kavanagh to a combined three goals and five turnovers.
The Greyhounds held both Johns Hopkins (16-7) and Florida (17-6) to single-digit scoring outputs. Detwiler recorded a career-high six draw controls in wins over Florida and Penn State (22-12), and she added her first collegiate assist in a 14-10 home win against Towson. Detwiler was honored as an Inside Lacrosse first team All-America selection earlier on Tuesday morning.
The Tewaaraton Award, which was first presented in 2001, annually honors the top male and female college lacrosse player in the United States. The selection committees are made up of premier collegiate coaches and are appointed annually by the Tewaaraton Foundation.
