Women’s Basketball Drops Regular Season Finale at Holy Cross

WORCESTER, Mass. – Hannah Niles matched her season-high with 14 points while leading three Loyola University Maryland players in double figures, but it was not enough for the Greyhounds in a 66-48 defeat at Holy Cross on Wednesday.

The Crusaders (18-11, 11-7 Patriot League) outscored Loyola (8-21, 5-13) by an 18-5 margin in the second quarter to take control. Lauren Manis paced the home side with 25 points, 15 rebounds and five assists in the victory.

Niles went 4 for 5 from 3-point range, and the Greyhounds hit 40.9 percent (9-22) of their attempts from long distance overall. Emily McAteer supplied 11 points (3-4 3FG) off the bench, while Stephanie Karcz chipped in 12 points, seven rebounds, four steals and three assists.

The last of Karcz's four steals moved her into a tie with Texas A&M's Toccara Williams (2001-04) for 11th place all-time in NCAA history. Karcz has 452 thefts in her career; she is three away from surpassing six-time WNBA All-Star and current South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley to move into the top 10.

Two of Niles' 3-pointers came in the first quarter, as the Greyhounds trailed just 19-16 after the opening 10 minutes. The Crusaders, though, started the second on an 8-0 run to open up a double-digit advantage, and they would stay in front by 10+ points for the entirety of the second half.

Niles has reached double figures in four of the past seven games overall. McAteer, who scored a season-high 18 points in the first meeting against Holy Cross back in January, ends the year averaging 14.5 ppg against the Crusaders.

Bri Rozzi dished out a season-best five assists while making her seventh start of the season. Loyola fought throughout the contest despite being limited to eight healthy players.

Regardless of tonight's outcome, the Greyhounds were already locked into the No. 8 seed for this year's Patriot League tournament. They will host No. 9 Army West Point in an opening round game at 5 p.m. on Saturday, looking to return to the quarterfinals for a fifth-consecutive season.
