The Matchup

  • Loyola men's soccer continues a key three-game homestand against conference opponents on Tuesday, as the Greyhounds host defending Patriot League champions American.
  • The two teams met three times during the abbreviated Spring 2021 season. American went 2-0-1 in those matchups, including a 3-2 victory at Ridley in the conference semifinals.

Last Time Out

  • Hale Lombard scored two goals late in the first half, and Lafayette held off a late offensive charge from Loyola to earn a 2-1 road victory on Saturday.
  • Justin Ingram scored his fourth goal of the season off a penalty kick for the Greyhounds after Loc San drew a foul inside the box in the 87th minute.
  • The Leopards (7-4-1, 3-1-1 PL) earned their first win in the series since 2014, snapping a run of four consecutive defeats to Loyola during the regular season.
  • Thomas Zinngrebe made his first appearance in goal for the Greyhounds in the second half, stopping Lafayette's only shot on target to keep the home side within striking distance.
  • Lafayette led 11-10 in shots, while Loyola had a 6-4 edge in corner kicks.
Series History
  • Loyola leads 27-17-6 in a series which dates back to 1949.
  • The Greyhounds won all four meetings between the two teams from 2016-19. Jordan Wiley provided the lone goal in a 1-0 win at Ridley on Nov. 6, 2019.
  • The Eagles halted that run with a 2-1 overtime victory at Ridley on March 20. The teams also played to a 1-1 draw in DC on April 3 last spring.
  • Playing without GK Chase Vosvick and two other starters, Loyola rallied from a 2-0 halftime deficit in last season's Patriot League semifinals before ultimately dropping a 3-2 decision to the Eagles.
  • Loyola outshot American by an overall margin of 48-16 during the three meetings last spring.
Scouting American
  • The Eagles (4-3-3, 2-1-1 PL) are 3-0-1 in their last four games since beginning conference play with a 2-1 defeat at Holy Cross on Sept. 18. They played to a 1-1 draw at home vs. Boston U on Saturday.
  • Sr. F David Coly scored AU's lone goal over the weekend, and he has a team-high 15 points (5 G, 5 A) on the year. The Patriot League's Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, Coly leads the conference in points per game (1.50) this fall.
  • Sr. D Nicolas Blassou joined Coly on the Preseason All-Patriot League Team; he has played in 945 out of a possible 966 minutes on the backline.
  • American topped Lafayette by a 2-1 final in double overtime to earn its first Patriot League Championship since 2004 last spring. The Eagles then advanced past Jacksonville on penalties to open up NCAA tournament play before falling 2-1 to No. 1 Clemson in the second round.

Offensive Leaders

  • Justin Ingram (4 G, 5 A) and Kelan Swales (4 G, 2 A) have factored in 10 of Loyola's 15 goals on the year.
  • Ingram is tied for the Patriot League lead and ranks 28th nationally in assists per game (0.50). He has a trio of three-point games this fall, contributing a goal and an assist in victories over UC Irvine (8/29), Lehigh (9/18) and Boston U (10/2).
  • Swales totaled five points (2 G, 1 A), the second most by a Patriot League player this season, in a 3-0 win over William & Mary (9/29), and he added game-winning goals against both Lehigh and Boston U.
  • Matthew Lala (2 G, 1 A) and Loc San (2 G, 1 A) are tied for third on the team in scoring with five points apiece, while Kevin Medrano ranks second behind Ingram with three assists on the year.
  • Jordan Wiley (1 G, 1 A), Jake Mayer (1 G) and Daniel Tshiani (1 G) are Loyola's other goal scorers this season.
  • Albert Kang has a pair of assists for the Greyhounds, while Marco Bla, Sean Graham and Jake Sweeney have one assist each.

Quick Notes

  • The Greyhounds are 4-0-1 this season when scoring multiple goals, and they are a perfect 3-0 when leading at halftime and when they outshoot opponents.
  • Chase Vosvick has held opponents to one goal or fewer in 25 of his 29 collegiate starts at Ridley Athletic Complex.
  • Five Greyhounds have combined for eight Patriot League weekly awards this season, led by Vosvick (3x Goalkeeper of the Week) and Justin Ingram (2x Midfielder of the Week)
  • Twenty different Loyola players, including seven of the program's 12 new additions to the roster for 2021, have started at least one game this season.
  • Sean Graham and Jordy Luchies are the only two Loyola players to start each of the season's first 11 games.

Greyhounds Earn Draw at No. 5 West Virginia

  • Chase Vosvick matched a career-high with seven saves, including several highlight-reel efforts, and Loyola was even in shots with nationally-ranked West Virginia for the final 65 minutes of a 0-0 draw between the two sides on Sept. 6.
  • West Virginia was coming off back-to-back victories over No. 3 Pittsburgh (2-1) and No. 17 Penn State (3-1), but was held off the scoresheet for the first time this season.
  • Shots were even at 6-6 after halftime, including a 5-4 edge for Loyola in the second half. Alex Bobocea played the final 1:05 in goal after Vosvick left due to injury.
  • Loyola was playing its first ranked opponent since earning a 1-1 draw at then-No. 2 Wake Forest back on Oct. 22, 2019.
Preseason Patriot League Honorees
  • Justin Ingram was voted in August to repeat as the Patriot League Midfielder of the Year. He is one of seven Greyhounds to return as a graduate student, taking advantage of the extra year of eligibility granted by the NCAA due to COVID-19.
  • Ingram was a first team United Soccer Coaches All-Region and first team All-Patriot League performer last spring after leading Loyola with nine points (3 G, 3 A).
  • All three of Loyola's Spring 2021 major award winners were recognized on the Preseason All-PL Team, with Ingram joined by Sam Brown and Chase Vosvick.
  • Brown was a second team United Soccer Coaches All-Region performer last season after ranking second on the team with six points (2 G, 2 A). He was the program's first Patriot League Offensive POY since Loyola joined the conference in 2013.
  • Vosvick is now a four-time Preseason All-League selection. He earned his third PL Goalkeeper of the Year honor in the spring after finishing 3-1-1 with a 0.92 goals-against average and .722 save percentage.
  • For a fourth time in the past five seasons, Loyola was projected to finish atop the Patriot League standings, as the Greyhounds (149 points, 10 first-place votes) edged American (137, 7) for the top spot in the conference's preseason poll.
More on Vosvick
  • Chase Vosvick is a three-time United Soccer Coaches first team All-Region selection (2017-19) and a three-time Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year (2017-18, Spring 2021). He was also named to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List prior to the 2021 spring season.
  • Vosvick has started 64 of Loyola's 71 games over the past four seasons, and is 36-21-6 with a 1.00 goals-against average, .728 save percentage and 23 solo shutouts in those 64 appearances.
Looking Ahead
  • Loyola wraps up its homestand with a 5 p.m. matchup against current Patriot League leaders Navy on Saturday.
  • The Mids (9-1-1, 4-1-0 PL) have won four games in a row since falling 1-0 to Boston U in their conference opener on Sept. 18.
