The Matchup

  • Loyola women's soccer wraps up the home portion of its regular season schedule on Saturday, hosting Lehigh at 1 p.m.
  • The Greyhounds are currently third in the Patriot League standings with 11 points (3-1-2 PL), while the Mountain Hawks (10 points, 3-2-1 PL) are tied with Navy for fourth place with three conference games remaining in the regular season.
  • Seniors Sarah Bayer, Gillian Borton, Kaleigh Gallagher, Grace Li and Sarah Mirr will be recognized in a pregame ceremony.

Last Time Out

  • Sarah Bayer scored her second goal of the season in the 38th minute, cancelling out Bucknell's opening strike and helping Loyola play to a 1-1 draw with a Bison squad that entered Wednesday tied for first in the Patriot League.
  • The Greyhounds earn a result against Bucknell (7-6-2, 4-1-1 PL) for a third-consecutive season, improving to 1-0-2 during that span.
  • Jess Korman and Sarah Mirr assisted on Bayer's goal, while Paige Sim made five saves for the home side. Both Korman and Mirr remain tied for the team lead with three assists apiece on the year.
  • The program's active scoring leader, Bayer now has 27 career points (11 G, 5 A) in 53 appearances for the Greyhounds.
  • Bucknell had a 22-7 edge in shots, though only six of those attempts landed on target. The Bison also earned 14 of the game's 18 corner kicks.

Offensive Leaders

  • Loyola has had a variety of offensive contributors throughout the season, with 17 different Greyhounds recording at least one point on the year.
  • Sarah Mirr (2 G, 3 A) and Ada Clare Tempert (3 G), are the current top point scorers, while Sarah Bayer, Baylee DeSmit and Kelly Hutton have each contributed two goals and an assist.
  • Two of Tempert's three goals have been game winners (Sept. 9 at Howard, Sept. 18 vs. Colgate). DeSmit continues to lead the team with 28 shots (16 SOG).
  • Kaleigh Gallagher (2 G) rounds out a group of six Greyhounds with multiple goals. Elizabeth Gallagher became Loyola's eighth different goal scorer during a 2-0 win over Lafayette on Oct. 2.

Series History

  • Loyola leads 5-3-3 in a series which dates back to 1995.
  • The Greyhounds are undefeated against Lehigh in five previous home meetings, going 3-0-2 overall and 1-0-2 since joining the Patriot League in 2013.
  • A playoff spot was on the line when the two teams met in the Spring 2021 regular season finale, with Lehigh needing a victory while Loyola could clinch with a win or draw.
  • The Mountain Hawks had advantages in shots (26-9) and corners (8-3), but Paige Sim matched a career-high with eight saves to secure Loyola's playoff spot with a 0-0 tie.
  • Sim made her first collegiate start during the previous meeting at Lehigh on Sept. 21, 2019. She made five stops in goal while a 70th minute goal from Hannah Hoefs lifted Loyola to a 1-0 victory.

Scouting Lehigh

  • The Mountain Hawks (5-6-1, 3-2-1 PL) improved their playoff positioning with a 2-1 home victory over Colgate on Wednesday night. All six of their conference games this season have been decided by one goal or fewer.
  • Lehigh is 4-1-1 at home this season compared to a 1-5-0 mark on the road. The lone away victory was a 2-1 win at Lafayette on Sept. 22.
  • Fr. F Corinne Lyght had both goals in Wednesday's win over Colgate, including the game-winner with 55 seconds remaining in regulation.
  • So. F Ava Schaller is the team's overall scoring leader with 11 points (4 G, 3 A).
  • Lehigh has scored 10 goals in its six Patriot League games, a total which is tied for second in the conference.
Quick Notes Entering the Weekend
  • Wednesday's draw vs. Bucknell was the first time Loyola has earned a result this season after surrendering the game's opening goal. The Greyhounds are now 0-5-1 when their opponent scores first, compared to a 6-0-1 mark when Loyola scores the opener.
  • Loyola has earned a result in 15 of 19 regular season games against Patriot League opponents since 2019, going 9-4-6 during that stretch.
  • Six players (Gillian Borton, Chloe Kuminkoski, Sarah Mirr, Nicole Rivas, Alex Searing, Paige Sim) have started each of the first 14 games for the Greyhounds.
  • Sim has held Patriot League opponents to one goal or fewer in 22 of 23 career starts against conference schools.
  • Sim (GK of the Week) and Kaleigh Gallagher (Offensive Player of the Week) both earned weekly Patriot League awards on Monday. Sim now has four awards this season and eight overall as a Greyhound, while Gallagher was recognized for a second time in her collegiate career.
Recipes for Success
  • The Greyhounds have won each of the last 12 games in which they have scored two goals or more, a streak which dates back to Sept. 6, 2018. Loyola is 4-0-0 when scoring multiple goals this season.
  • The Greyhounds are also undefeated (5-0-1) when leading at halftime this fall. They are 7-0-2 overall in their last eight games when holding an advantage at the intermission.

More on Sim

  • Paige Sim has played 1309 out of a possible 1320 minutes this season, and she has totaled 6+ saves in seven of her 14 appearances.
  • For the year, Sim is 6-5-3 with a 1.03 goals-against average, a .808 save percentage and a conference-high five shutouts. Taking away Loyola's defeats to ACC leaders Clemson and Wake Forest, she is 6-3-3 with a 0.63 GAA and .864 save percentage.
  • Sim was a third team All-Patriot League honoree during the 2021 spring season, and she was a second team selection following her freshman season in 2019.
  • For her career, Sim is 15-9-9 with a 0.73 GAA, a .838 save percentage and 13 shutouts in 32 starts.

Worth Noting

  • Nine of 11 primary starters from the spring are back for the Greyhounds this season, including six former All-Patriot League players in Bayer (2018 - 2nd Team, 2019 - 1st Team, Spring 2021 - 3rd Team) Paige Sim (2019 - 2nd Team, Spring 2021 - 3rd Team), Ada Clare Tempert (Spring 2021 - 1st Team), Kaleigh Gallagher (2019 - 3rd Team), Julia Gray (2019 - 2nd Team) and Nicole Rivas (Spring 2021 - 3rd Team).
  • Gray, who served as Loyola's co-SAAC president for the 2020-21 academic year, was announced in June as the Patriot League's representative on the NCAA Division I SAAC. She begins her two-year term this fall.
  • Gray, Rivas and Gillian Borton were chosen as team captains for the 2021 season. Borton is a first-year team captain, while Gray and Rivas served as co-captains for the 2020-21 academic year.
  • A second team All-Patriot League honoree in 2019, Gray was also a Preseason All-Patriot League selection in the spring before missing a majority of the season due to injury. She started all 19 games at center back in 2019, anchoring a defense which surrendered just seven goals over the season's final 12 contests.
  • Loyola has two of the last three Maryland Gatorade Girls Soccer Player of the Year honorees on its roster, with Tempert recognized in 2019 and freshman Baylee DeSmit chosen in 2020.
Looking Ahead
  • Loyola has a week off before traveling to conference leaders Boston University for a big matchup at 1 p.m. next Saturday.
