The Matchup

  • Loyola men's soccer wraps up a stretch of three-straight home games this Saturday, as the Greyhounds face Patriot League leaders Navy on Alumni Weekend.

Last Time Out

  • Kelan Swales and Justin Ingram scored 48 seconds apart midway through the second half, breaking open what had been a one-goal game and sending Loyola to a key 3-0 win over American on Tuesday.
  • The Greyhounds snapped a two-game losing streak and moved into a tie for fourth place in the Patriot League standings. They also avenged a defeat to the defending conference champion Eagles (4-4-3, 2-2-1 PL) in last season's semifinal round.
  • Daniel Tshiani opened the scoring for the home side in the 17th minute, while Chase Vosvick made two saves in goal to earn his 24th career shutout.
  • Ingram (1 G, 2 A) and Tshiani (1 G, 1 A) both set season-highs with four and three points, respectively.
  • Albert Kang and Jake Mayer both drew fouls in the box which led to penalty kick attempts for the Greyhounds.
Series History
  • Loyola and Navy are tied 5-5-2 in a series which dates back to 1979.
  • The Greyhounds have a 4-3-1 advantage since joining the Patriot League in 2013, and they have won four of the past five meetings against the Midshipmen overall.
  • Albert Kang scored his first collegiate goal in the first half, and Justin Ingram doubled Loyola's advantage with a 79th minute penalty kick to lift the Greyhounds to a key 2-0 road win at Navy during the Spring 2021 season.
  • That was the first of two road victories to conclude the spring which clinched first place for Loyola in the South division standings.
  • Navy earned a 2-0 victory in the last meeting at Ridley on Sept. 28, 2019, as the Mids prevailed despite trailing 21-4 in shots and 12-1 in corners.
Scouting Navy
  • The Mids (9-1-1, 4-1-0 PL) have scored 12 goals during a four-game winning streak since suffering their only defeat of the season (1-0 at Boston U) on Sept. 18. Navy topped Colgate, Holy Cross and Army by 3-0 scorelines and edged Lafayette 3-2 in double overtime on Sept. 29.
  • The Mids have outscored opponents 22-6 on the year. Their 0.52 team goals-against average leads the Patriot League and ranks seventh nationally.
  • Senior GK Tyler Fahning has played every minute in goal for Navy. He ranks second in Division I in shutouts (7) and seventh in GAA. Fahning also tops the Patriot League in save percentage (.833).
  • So. F/M Sidney Paris (4 G, 5 A) and Sr. F Jacob Williams (5 G, 1 A) are Navy's top point scorers. Williams scored all three goals in last weekend's win over Army and was named the United Soccer Coaches National POW on Wednesday.
  • Navy's backline is led by Patriot League Preseason Defensive Player of the Year Matt Nocita and fellow senior Tyler Collins, who have both played every minute this fall.

Offensive Leaders

  • Justin Ingram (5 G, 7 A) and Kelan Swales (5 G, 2 A) have factored in 13 of Loyola's 18 goals on the year.
  • Ingram leads the Patriot League and ranks 12th nationally in assists per game (0.64). He has had four games with three-plue points this fall, contributing a goal and an assist in victories over UC Irvine (8/29), Lehigh (9/18) and Boston U (10/2) in addition to his performance vs. American on Tuesday.
  • Swales totaled five points (2 G, 1 A), the second most by a Patriot League player this season, in a 3-0 win over William & Mary (9/29), and he added game-winning goals against both Lehigh and Boston U.
  • Matthew Lala (2 G, 1 A), Loc San (2 G, 1 A) and Daniel Tshiani (2 G, 1 A) are tied for third on the team in scoring with five points apiece, and Kevin Medrano ranks second behind Ingram with three assists on the year.
  • Jordan Wiley (1 G, 1 A) and Jake Mayer (1 G) are Loyola's other goal scorers this season.
  • Albert Kang has a pair of assists for the Greyhounds, while Marco Bla, Sean Graham and Jake Sweeney have one assist each.

Quick Notes

  • The Greyhounds are 5-0-1 this season when scoring multiple goals, and they are a perfect 4-0 when leading at halftime and when they outshoot opponents.
  • Chase Vosvick has held opponents to one goal or fewer in 26 of his 30 collegiate starts at Ridley Athletic Complex.
  • Five Greyhounds have combined for eight PL weekly awards this season, led by Vosvick (3x Goalkeeper of the Week) and Justin Ingram (2x Midfielder of the Week)
  • Twenty different Loyola players, including seven of the program's 12 new additions to the roster for 2021, have started at least one game this season.
  • Jordy Luchies is the only Loyola player to start each of the season's first 12 games.

More on Vosvick

  • Chase Vosvick is a three-time United Soccer Coaches first team All-Region selection (2017-19) and a three-time Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year (2017-18, Spring 2021). He was also named to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List prior to the 2021 spring season.
  • Vosvick has started 65 of Loyola's 72 games over the past four seasons, and is 37-21-6 with a 0.98 goals-against average, .730 save percentage and 24 solo shutouts in those 65 appearances.

Greyhounds Earn Draw at No. 5 West Virginia

  • Chase Vosvick matched a career-high with seven saves, including several highlight-reel efforts, and Loyola was even in shots with nationally-ranked West Virginia for the final 65 minutes of a 0-0 draw between the two sides on Sept. 6.
  • West Virginia was coming off back-to-back victories over No. 3 Pittsburgh (2-1) and No. 17 Penn State (3-1), but was held off the scoresheet for the first time this season.
  • Shots were even at 6-6 after halftime, including a 5-4 edge for Loyola in the second half. Alex Bobocea played the final 1:05 in goal after Vosvick left due to injury.
  • Loyola was playing its first ranked opponent since earning a 1-1 draw at then-No. 2 Wake Forest back on Oct. 22, 2019.
Preseason Patriot League Honorees
  • Justin Ingram was voted in August to repeat as the Patriot League Midfielder of the Year. He is one of seven Greyhounds to return as a graduate student, taking advantage of the extra year of eligibility granted by the NCAA due to COVID-19.
  • Ingram was a first team United Soccer Coaches All-Region and first team All-Patriot League performer last spring after leading Loyola with nine points (3 G, 3 A).
  • All three of Loyola's Spring 2021 major award winners were recognized on the Preseason All-PL Team, with Ingram joined by Sam Brown and Chase Vosvick.
  • Brown was a second team United Soccer Coaches All-Region performer last season after ranking second on the team with six points (2 G, 2 A). He was the program's first Patriot League Offensive POY since Loyola joined the conference in 2013.
  • Vosvick is now a four-time Preseason All-League selection. He earned his third PL Goalkeeper of the Year honor in the spring after finishing 3-1-1 with a 0.92 goals-against average and .722 save percentage.
  • For a fourth time in the past five seasons, Loyola was projected to finish atop the Patriot League standings, as the Greyhounds (149 points, 10 first-place votes) edged American (137, 7) for the top spot in the conference's preseason poll.
Looking Ahead
  • Loyola has two road games lined up next week, beginning with a 7 p.m. matchup at Wake Forest on Tuesday night.
  • That will be the final non-conference matchup of the regular season. The Greyhounds return to Patriot League play with a game at Colgate next Saturday afternoon.
