BALTIMORE –
Baylee DeSmit fired a free kick into the top right corner 59 seconds into the second half, and Loyola University Maryland's defense shutdown Lehigh throughout to pick up a key 1-0 victory on Senior Day.
The Greyhounds (7-5-3, 4-1-2 PL) improve to 3-0-2 in their last five games, allowing just two goals during that span, and they maintain their top-three position in the Patriot League standings with two regular season games remaining. Loyola also improves to 4-0-2 in six lifetime meetings at home against the Mountain Hawks (5-7-1, 3-3-1 PL).
Grace DenBleyker drew the free kick which led to DeSmit's game winner just outside the box on the left side. DeSmit's curling effort was her third goal of the season, tying her with
Ada Clare Tempert for the team lead.
Paige Sim made three saves, all in the second half, to secure her sixth clean sheet of the season in goal. Each of Loyola's last three victories, and six of seven overall on the year, have come via shutout.
The Greyhounds' four Patriot League victories are tied for their most since joining the conference in 2013, matching the 2015 team. Loyola also improved to 5-2-2 at Ridley Athletic Complex this season.
Sim is now 7-5-3 this fall with a 0.96 goals-against average and .815 save percentage.
MK Barnes,
Chloe Kuminkoski and
Alex Searing each played all 90 minutes on the backline to help preserve the shutout.
Seniors
Sarah Bayer,
Gillian Borton,
Kaleigh Gallagher,
Grace Li and
Sarah Mirr were all recognized in a pregame ceremony prior to the victory. Loyola finished with a 9-7 edge in shots, while both teams earned a pair of corner kicks.
The Greyhounds' final two games of the regular season will both take place away from home, beginning with a trip to Patriot League frontrunners Boston University at 2 p.m. next Saturday.
